We upgraded two older ones in the last few months with new motherboards, new processors, new hard drives, new OS and more RAM and video cards that handle two monitors. All the other parts were recycled from the previous boxes.
New machines are nice but unless you need to write them off for tax purposes it seems a bit pointless.

Mac Mini, will be here in March
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60. Let me repeat... A 120 x 60 button and no more that 3 lines of DEFAULT SIZE AND COLOR text.Comment

I built a top of the line computer last July which costed me $4600. I think that I'll probably build another one towards the end of this year.
As far as my laptop, it's almost a year old now. I don't spend a lot of time on it, so it'll probably hold me over for another year.Comment

this machine is a year and two months old.
last weekend I had to put a new hard drive in it.
no more factory garbage, next time I will build my own.Comment

There isn't much improvement in performance on the horizon and until it gets to say 30% over what I have now I won't buy a new motherboard or CPU.
My last big upgrade was to go all SATA drives, and that was a nice improvement.
I may buy a Mac Mini to screw around with as I think it's and interesting idea (computer as cheap disposable appliance), but it's hard for me to take Apple seriously in terms of performance.Last edited by Shoplifter; 01-28-2005, 03:39 PM.Comment

I built a new machine in December, spent a month trying to convince them that the motherboard was bad, so really, I haven't even had it "working" for a month. Didn't think upgrading from a P4 2.4 to a P4 3.6 would make such a difference in speed, but boy did it. Unfortunately I can't overclock it, it runs way too hot as is. The newest chipsets are just too hot.Free agentComment

Just built 2 of these...
AMD 64 3500+ 90nm
geForce 6800 Ultra OC (from XFX)
2GB Corsair 2-2-2-5 XMS Dual Channel
Audigy 2...
etc etc...
Words cannot describe how sweet these things are, it beats the hell out of my P4 3.06GHz that I use at work

Just a couple weeks ago from this thread: http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=414649
Rhino22 put together a great box for me. Asus K8V SE Deleuxe MB, Athlon 64 3400+, gig of DDR ram, ATI x800 Pro, Serial ATA, Aspire 520 watt PS, Promise SATA Raid chip and Via SATA Raid built into the southbridge, built in gigabit networking, 6.1 surround sound, you name it, this Mobo has it.
$1180 including shipping. This beast is fast!
$875 if you want the standard ATI X600 pro (plus shipping).
BTW - if you are looking for SATA drives, NewEgg.com has the Western Digital Caviar SE 160GB for $98.00 each (OEM).. killer deal. 3 year warranty.Comment

What do you want to use it for? For normal, everyday use, the Powerbook is more than enough, for serious video editing the Powermac is better.Originally posted by candyflipI am on the Apple Store online right now, shopping for a new one.
Hmmmm...17in Powerbook or Dual G5 Tower? Tough decision./(bb|[^b]{2})/Comment
