When I was a kid, I knew this older woman that said as you grow older, there will be a few events in your life that you remember in almost a surreal fashion. For her generation, it was the JFK assassination and the moon landing, probably a few others, but those are the ones that she mentioned.

I was late to this thread as I was on the phone (both long distance and local) and watching the news for much of the morning.
