Bi-Directional Infinity

Good evening.

People seem comfortable enough with the idea of infinity in the future-ward (higher numbers) direction. This is true in mathematics; and it?s true in Theosophy. We can all imagine souls departing the earth, one after another, towards Heaven in eternal perpetuity. But cast your enquiry backwards, towards the past, so as to embrace the question of Origin, and our imaginations fail us. We can only conceive of a Big Bang, of a single-point Moment of Creation.

I would like to see more of us wondering about ways in which the history of the earth and human reality as we know it, the Universe itself, in other words, might stretch backwards in time towards a ?negative infinity?.

But we don't really see much comfort with the forward direction of infinity, outside the mathematical concept, otherwise. Religions, which provide the proper state of mind for considering infinity, conspicuously omit infinity within their scheme of things ? in both directions. But in the case of religion, it is NOT a matter of insufficient imagination. They all instruct us that an End is coming of some sort. They teach us to expect an Apocalypse of Transcendence (containing both punishment for the wicked and redemption for the good), that will render meaning unto the experience of life. For some religions, this moment arrives only for the individual, at the moment of his death. For others, the end is an event that will touch all living persons at once. I would say that religions keep hold of people?s minds as they do, only because they invest life with an artificial urgency, an urgency that derives NOT from the inescapable nearness of death (though our fear of death is surely used), but from our fear of being called to answer for all the we have done.

Between birth and death, we seem always to be caught in a feeling of desperate crescendo. And the fact that the dates marked on their sacred calendars by the Authors of Religion approach and pass without incident does nothing to alleviate us. Religions keep predicting and nothing ever happens as predicted. There is the occasional recruitment of current events (the discovery of a planet, the death of a despot) into the list of auguries. But, still, nothing EVER comes to pass as they said/warned us it would.

I guess what I?m saying is I?d like to have more people, first, believing in the possibility of, then, craving a kind of tranquility that comes from sitting comfortably in the middle of nowhere, between the two directions of infinity.

You are going to be banned soon for all of these utterly meaningless posts. My two cents.
