From November 8-10, we are sending an email to all domain customers informing you of a new domain transfer policy, enforced by ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). This policy dictates that we must honor any transfer requests, even if you do not personally confirm them. To prevent unauthorized transfers, lock your domains. This service is free and takes only a minute.

Uhm, there is nothing on ICANN? Look again.

http://www.icann.org/transfers/policy-12jul04.htm

Also, this is not half as bad as it sounds when godaddy explains it.

The verification of domain ownership simply changed from CONTROLLING to RECEIVING registrar.

Before if you moved away from godaddy you had to ok the move at godaddy, now if you move to xyz you have to confirm it at xyz.

You never transfered a domain before huh?

Most of the time it works like this right now:

You go to the new registrar and say "I want to transfer domain xyz.com to you" they say ok, and initiate it.

A short time later you get a mail from the current registrar saying someone initiated a transfer, to ok it go to URL XYZ and enter ABC to confirm the transfer.

When you do that, the domain is basically transfered.

It changes from registrar to registrar how they exactly do it, but thats the general idea.

The change going into place now is that the NEW registrar has to verify who you are and not the old one. The reason they changed this most likely is that there are a bunch of registrars out there that try to make it difficult to move away from them so you have to pay another year.

As I said before, *BIG* difference this time is there are 2 ways for the transfer to go through:

One: You receive the transfer request email and you decline or approve.

Two: You don't receive or don't respond to the transfer request. The transfer still goes through after five days.

It ain't rocket science to see how to abuse it. Sure there are dispute resolution procedures etc but ICANNs standard response is "talk to your registrar".

Registrars MUST fulfill transfer requests in five days. With hundreds of thousands of domains flying about they ain't going to be going though each request manually.

Do you think there are more unscrupulous registrars or webmasters? I can see 5000 russian webmasters scanning the whois database for "active" domains right now. "Active" means not locked for those who dont know.

You people do not friggin get it.

You need to VERIFY WHO YOU ARE to transfer a domain! Now and AFTER the change also!!!!

What makes it friggin more secure now than after the change?!

Duh!

I mean how can you know if a domain that you do NOT own is locked or not? There is no info in the whois about the status.

Don't you have to prepay for each domain transfer and you lose your money if it is declined? If not, what registrar are you using?

Oh and the below statement alone prooves that this is not a troll.

"Failure by the Registrar of Record to respond within five (5) calendar days to a notification from the Registry regarding a transfer request will result in a default "approval" of the transfer." http://www.icann.org/transfers/policy-12jul04.htm
