There was news before now of Bin-Laden's organisation using Internet message boards to transmit coded messages. I'll see if I can find a link to a news article.

I remember reading that in some of the indictments. Apparently ths US was able to track him to some degree by his use of a satellite phone. This apparently stopped about a year ago.
