404 pages or "Filter" pages to better target your surfers?

I was talking to a webmaster last week about his 404 traffic and came up with an idea to filter that traffic using our video trailers to better target the surfers interest.

Here's a "semi" final result http://main.videopass.com/t/404/?ref=10000

Filtering traffic by niche leads to better conversions, obviously ...

So, what do you guys think? Any feedback would be appreciated!

Looks like a winner nice page that will load fast. I will have to give it a shot.

In all seriousness, it is a good idea . . . and if you can filter it according to niche, instead of throwing them all on one page it would be that much better.

That is essentially what we have done with SPP and has made for mad conversion ratios.

Yup, agreed! Webmasters who want that will be given the option to link specifically to the genre page of their choice instead of getting the prepage with all the genres... =)

hehe, I just coded it for those who wanted it right now

example:
http://main.videopass.com/t/404/?ref...&type=Straight

you can pass directly to the genre of your choice... if the ref shows, it will hide the return to home so they are jailed in that page to view trailers/ and or move forward

What is the link for tranny midgets? I have alot of 404 on that ;)

All kidding aside it looks like a good move.
One nice thing to add may be a javascript go back button.

I agree, and you can - as my guy explained - but the idea was generated from a need to take 404 traffic and convert it.

Depending on the site, 404 traffic could be looking for anything, right?

I wanted to give them as wide a selection to choose from to further qualify what they'r interested in.

Breaking it down by niche (in one place) was the easiest and most effective way I could think of to filter them correctly.

Thing is ... it's not just 404 traffic that this works with. Try it in exits and it will do wonders too.
