Tommy Lee says time at UNL tough work
LINCOLN - This note was posted on the door of Tommy Lee's college room Saturday:
Tommy Lee, left, participates in a horticulture exam at UNL. "Do not disturb. Tommy is studying. (Seriously)." That's how the former Motley Crue drummer said he has approached his short college experience at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln during a press conference Sunday. Lee spent most of October and a few days in November filming a reality television series for NBC. As part of the show, he attended classes in American literature, chemistry and horticulture, and auditioned for the university marching band. "It's the real deal," said Lee, who noted how difficult his classes were several times during the course of the press conference. "I'm playing catch up, since we jumped in the middle of the semester and I'm studying . . . trying to keep up and take the tests." Lee's rock-star reputation had some people concerned that the series might reflect poorly on the university. He spent a few months in jail for kicking ex-wife Pamela Anderson. Lee said he filled his time at UNL with studying and filming. His average day included rising at 6 a.m. to make 7 a.m. marching band practice. Then, he headed off to class, spending time in between to film around campus. That's not to mention the hours he spent studying, especially chemistry, which he found extremely hard. Horticulture was his favorite course. "For a while there, it was just bananas," Lee said. The drummer said he enjoyed a night on the town maybe once or twice during his entire stay, though that might have been partly because of out-of-town commitments. Lee recently appeared on "The Late Show With David Letterman," "Larry King Live" and other talk shows to hawk his new autobiography, "Tommyland," which hit bookstores Oct. 19. Filming at UNL will probably wrap-up in the next week or so, according to executive producer Eddie October. NBC has not set an air date for the reality series, tentatively titled, "Tommy Lee Goes to College." It could be as early as next January or February. Lee put to rest any fears that the series might cast the state in a poor light: "If anyone is going to look ridiculous here, it's me." |
