a) The average person (in any country) can't comprehend policy beyond the headline found in their newspaper.

b) The US is dominant enough that it can make decisions in it's best interests without worldwide consent. That's a unique situation. We don't have to ratify stupid-ass treaties we don't really want to join but must as we need support to enter into some other organization (see Russia signing Kyoto to gain entry into the WTO). We can fight wars in multiple fronts sans any other support if need be. We are the only country on earth that can make our own decisions without fear of repurcussion. Don't like what we decided? Too fucking bad. What are you gonna do? Start a military campaign against us? Obviously not. Start a trade war with us? Good fucking luck. UN sanctions? LOL, without US support there is no UN. Boot us from the WTO or some other organization? Sure, the downside is that organization is no longer relevant. Ignore the U.S. entirely? Sure, you can do it... some countries have successfully done so for decades (Cuba, Libya) provided your prepared to watch your country evolve at a snail's pace relative to the rest of the world.

End result of b) is the U.S. doesn't always make decisions based on the lowest common denominator. It can set policy with worldwide effects based on it's own ideology... basically the only country that can do so. That breeds a natural resentment that in turn gets amplified by a) above. Citizens of other countries are completely mystified that US politicians elected by US citizens make decisions deemed in the best interests of the US rather than their own country.

Those who study policy can certainly understand US positions (Kyoto sucks for the US, terrorists are the only threat left to the US so we go perhaps overboard trying to exterminate it, etc.). They might not agree with US decisions but those who study policy aren't so ignorant as to believe the US is actually foolish.

By contrast those who study US policy by reading the 120 word column in their newspaper just conclude the US is arrogant, "dumb" and whatnot.

There's a shitload more of the latter compared to the former. End result is you see large chunks of the worldwide population naively believe the US is simply dumb and arrogant.

It'll be interesting to see what happens if the EU ever becomes a cohesive psuedo-government that approaches the impact of the US. I think it's quite possible in time, at which point Europe will get to enjoy some of this worldwide resentment and the Euros will say to themselves, just as US citizens do, "so what".

Right now, America is in danger of OPEC and many other countries deciding to denominate oil in Euros instead of the US dollar. This would be devestating to the US economy, and that's not good for anyone.

Now is not the time for cowboy arrogance. Countries are already switching their reserve currencies from the US dollar to the Euro. American arrogance only gives them more reason to speed up the process.

I think Esbee's point is well made with the exception of the above. Did nobody grasp the true significance of KRL's 'lights'?

What people have to consider is The United States is a VERY young country and an even younger power. 50 years ago they were just starting to rise, mostly from industrialising to supply the allies in the Second World War. Then with the threat from the Communists in Russia.

Yes Americans are very keen to tell you how they saved the world from Nazis and Commies, take away those two threatrs and the USA would still be a largely agricultural economy. Without saving the world where would the US be today?

The USA is a world power and has to take the good and the bad. Criticising someone or something does not mean you hate it, I critisise Eva, my staff, my daughter. It means I love them and want them to do better and they tell me when I screw up. At no time do I think they hate me.

Bush has been a bad President and will go down in history very badly. Even without 9/11 he was a lame duck President. When it happened he came forward to bring the country together and gained the sympathy and respect of the world.

Not reading the Intelligence report that pointed out Al Queda was planning a terrorist attack using airline planes was a mistake and one that he can be forgiven for, Presidents have too much to read and things slip through. Not having people who would read it and act upon it is not a slip up and down to poor management.

Invading Afghanistan was right as Bin Laden should of been dealt with by Clinton a lot earlier, in my opinion. Invading Iraq on the information he had and the advice he was getting from some was big mistake. A mistake that the world and the US will pay for decades.

Yes the US is the only super power today, but to remain there is a lot tougher than getting there. Some anylists predict the EU will be as strong financially as the US in under 10 years. Seems they are counting on the EU growing and the US shrinking.

A number one sportsman has to make sure on a daily basis he stays number one, it's not a crown you win and keep for ever. Others want to be number one as well.
