Bandwidth Question?

K this question might seem simple but trying to figure it out.

If you say get your own T1/OC line you can host off it directly? k from there the bandwidth comes with that? or do u pay on top of the current T1/OC-12 etc bill? If you had that shitload of bandwidth traffic?

Umm what kind of bandwidth could a T1 / and Various lines do as far as bandwidth?

T1 =
DS1 =
DS3 =
OC-3 =
OC-12 =

Would you reccomend paying somone else more to maintain servers or rather run your own servers have your own line?

Trying to figure out the pro's / con's and get familiar with this crap. I really appreciate any info regarding this!

Give me a ring, and I can go over some of the different options with you if you'd like. It would be hard to list all the pro's and con's here. ;-)

Keev,

We're looking at setting up our own network as well.

Hit me up on icq 96944506 if you want to chat.

Bottom line: It won't be cost effective for you to buy your own lines. Period.

Go with a big co-lo center where THEY handle all the bandwidth redundancy and capacity planning, and you pay a cheapass rate for space and bit shuffling.

it takes more than just a line,,
you have to worry bout the facilities
and equipment,,,the shit can be a big investment,,,even you started hosting a DS3 wouldn't be a big enough network unless you plan on using only like 20 customers,,

DS1/T1= 1.5 meg
DS3= 28 ds1's
oc3= 3 DS3
and so forth,,,

your best option is to get a good colo spot with a well known backbone provider

Gotta agree on this one. Plus, if your host handles the hardware, capacity planning, backups, and security, that's more time for you to concentrate on developing your sites.

[No, I don't work for a hosting provider. In fact, I got downsized 3 weeks ago and am still looking. Anyone need an MCSE Administrator in the midwest??]

T1/DS1 = 1.5Mbps
T3/DS3 = 45Mbps
OC3 = 155Mbps
OC12 = 622Mbps

Unless your transit provider is in the same building, chances are your circuit rides the PSTN, and there is always a charge from the telco for that circuit most commonly known as 'loop'.

Sometimes, your transit provider will be willing to eat the loop if the deal is sweet enough for them (or if they are semi-desperate).

Depending on the amount of money you have, you have the choice of hosting your own servers or having someone else host it. If you're on a budget, chances are you'll pick the latter.

If your sites have high conversion rates and you have extra cash to burn, you can do it yourself, but I honestly have to say, I only know a handful of people who have done this.

Follow the advice that many people have given here already, unless you can justify the extra cost/staff for 12 months (assuming you sign a 1 year contract, instead of getting shitty month-to-month pricing), it's probably not worth it.

If you want more info, drop me a line on ICQ @ 34215259.
