Joe,

49 percent of stats are made up on the spot. :)

Though my immigration is not as dramatic as gobush, my parents also came to the United States with very little money, but a dedication to make a better life for their son.

I can relate to gobush, down to the part of being an outsider but making his way to become a citizen of the nation that adpoted him.

Everyone in the Phillipines wants to leave. Some can't make it to the United States. Some end up in the Middle East, some in Japan, some in Australia, but they all want to come to the United States.

Every single part of this statement is bullshit.

So let me get this straight... you are trying to tell me that every migrant that settles in Australia or Canada or England (or whetever) really wants to be in the USA but is just settling for whetever country they're in?

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

That is perhaps the most idiotic thing I've ever heard.

gobush 11-03-2004 08:18 PM

joe, go to the 'UNITED NATIONS" web page and look under the 'IMMIGRATION MATERIAL STATISTICS".. You will find there the facts to back up my statements(i dont know how to put hte link here)

And for the record you are correct about the total population numbers you posted but look at the percentage of immigration allowed in your country. It is pathetic. The total percentage of immigration per 1000 citizens IN AUSTRALIS is 5% OF WHAT THE U.S. ALLOWS

And of course there are successful immigrants all over the world, I never said there wasn't. But there is no other country that comes close to the u.s. in either real numbers or percentage of population.

And you never answered my questions joe, how many times have you ever had to put up any kind of fight for your own rights? I'll answer for you. NEVER.

IS HTERE ANYONE ELSE ON THIS BOARD WHO HAS EVER HAD TO ACTUALLY FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT TO EXIST? I HAVE. AND ONCE YOU'VE ACTUALLY DONE THIS FOR YOURSELF YOU WILL UNDERSTAND HOW WHINING LITTLE BITCHES LIKE JOE CAN REALLY PISS PEOPLE OFF.

Now this does not make me better than anyone else. My life was full of struggle but that is what made me what i am today and i am in no way looking for any sypmathy or special treatment. I would not trade my life or my life experiences for anything...

It is people like my parents, and your parents and grandparents who did fight so that we could have the freedom to do exactly what we are doing here. THAT IS WHY THE LITTLE WHINNING AUSTRALIAN BITCH SHOULD , AS IN HIS OWN WORDS, PUT UP OR SHUT UP!!

AMERICA IS THE GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH. END OF STORY.

Sorry but the fact that you were a boat person doesn't somehow magically make your statistics correct.

"With more than four million people born overseas (representing 23% of the total population) Australia has one of the largest immigrant populations in the world. When compared to other major host countries in the OECD in 1993 only the United States of America, Germany and Canada had bigger migrant populations. However, when measured as a proportion of the total population, Australia had the largest migrant population of all OECD countries except Luxembourg, whose relatively small migrant population of 125,000 represented 31% of the total population."

Not to defend Joe's radical views, but he didn't get owned in the slightest. Obviously you just appreciate a nice bedtime story more than the facts. A hard luck story doesn't magically overrule the facts just because it's a nice story. Well, unless you're just trying to get under Joe's skin, by siding with style over substance to score a "point" and annoy him, In which case go ahead.

gobush 11-03-2004 08:41 PM

Joe, the stats you cited, have to do with those seeking "assylum". Do you know what that means? Not every immigrant is seeking 'Assylum" you moron. As a matter of fact only about 6% of the immigrants to the u.s. are seeking assylum(mostly from religious prosocutrion)
It is becoming painfully obvious that you just cant accept the fact that a country of immigrants, only 225 years old has become the one and only superpower on this planet.

It doesnt matter how much you whine and complain, the u.s. will 'Survive' another four years of bush. We will have the largest economy, the highest standard of living, and more freedoms than we know what to do with.
And to paraphrase a great movie"I THOUHGHT THERE WERE ONLY TWO THINGS FORM AUSTRALIS,,KANGAROOS AND QUEERES. AND SINCE KANGAROOS CANT TYPE,(well you figure it out)

joe, i have to apologize for the end of my last post. Even thought you called me a dipshit in your earlier post i feel very bad about having stooped to your level in my reply. Australia is a fine and beautiful country, inhabited by fine and beautiful people.

Its a shame that though we both enjoy freedoms that our forefathers could only dream of, we let such trivial matters have such great influence over our lives.

FREEDOM IS A WONDERFUL THING THAT CAN NEVER BE TRULY APPRECIATED UNTIL YOU LOOSE IT, AND ONCE YOU HAVE YOU WILL DO ANYTHING TO GET IT BACK.

And for the record, when you look at the INS(immigration and naturalization service) statistics for the u.s., they do not count those immigrants that have become citizens of the u.s. I became a citizen of the u.s. in 1997. HOw many of the immigrants and boat people that come to australian shores are allowed to become citizens of Australia?

Immigration: New Citizenships (per capita)

This should answer your question. We are ranked slightly higher than the USA when new citizenships are looked at on a per capita basis.

joe, let me clarify one thing...when i use the term immigrant i am referring to a person whose intentiion is to become a citizen of the nation he has immigrated to.Otherwise I would have used the word REFUGEE. IMy family were refugees when we landed in Australia. I dont think my parents had any intentions of trying to become australian citizens, thats why we were deported..

I may be incorrect on this but i do not think australia allows immigration into it's country unless the individual intends on becomeing a citizen. I know for sure that you can immigrate to the u.s. and you never have to become a citizen. A very large number of immigrants in the u.s. never become citizens.

And I will say again, Australia is a beautifu country, with beautiful people

You are indeed correct.

"Why become a citizen now ?

Australian citizenship was born in 1949. Since then, over 3 million settlers have taken the important step of becoming an Australian citizen. Over 70,000 settlers continue to become new citizens each year.

There are currently over 900,000 permanent residents still eligible to become Australian citizens.

So make your decision to join us. There's never been a better time to become an Australian citizen!"

Permanent residents are not obligated to become citizens.

In fact, you do not necessarily have to renounce your old citizenship. In many cases you can become a dual citizen.

To everyone here who may be from adifferent country I would like you to look up the bill of rights and compare it to the laws that govern your homeland. I'm not saying its better or worse, but i've lived alot of places where the basic human rights of people are virtually ignored. I have a copy of the bill of rights on the wall in my living room. It is perhaps the most important document ever procuced,(though some would argue the MAGNA CATRA).

We may have elected the town idiot as president, but we will survive. No one man is capable of destroying a nation that is built upon a document like the constitution of the united states. thanks joe,
i wasnt aware that australia offered dual citizenship..Part of the oath that one takes in the u.s. is to DENOUNCE your allegance to your homeland. That can be very difficult to do. I had tears in my eyes when I did it, but hten i realized that if I ever went back there again i would surely be impriosoned or worse.Cambodia does not want me back. In the late 70's and early 80's many cambodian, laotian and vietnamese refugees returned to their homelands. And many of their family members who remained wherever it was that they were never heard from them again.

Interesting.

U.S. citizenship oath:

"I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God. In acknowledgement whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature."

Australian citizenship oath (now called a pledge of commitment):

"Austalian Citizenship Pledge No 1 (Oath)
From this time forward, under God,
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect, and
whose laws I will uphold and obey.

Australian Citizenship Pledge No 2 (Affirmation)
From this time forward,
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect, and
whose laws I will uphold and obey."

Quite a difference.

:2 cents:

gobush 11-03-2004 09:50 PM

brisk, i in no way meant to insult anyone.

There is a major misunderstanding of what the constitution of the united states really is.

The constitution is a list of rights, granted to the government, by the people.

The constitution does not give me the right to free speech. The const. says the government has no right to abridge my speech.

The const. does not give a woman the right to have an abortion, it says that the government cannot interfere with my privacy...

The constitution is not the law that the people have to follo. It is the law that the government has to follow. If the government tries to pass a law that is in violation of the constitution then what is known as the checks and balances of our system of government are in place to repeal that law as "unconstitutional"

I was merely stating that there is no other system of governance in the world that gives the authority to the people over the government. Yes, there are other forms of democracy in the world, but htey are not the same as the u.s. As a matter of fact, the u.s. system of government is actually a REPUBLICAN form of government. That is, we are a group of united, yet individual states. Any powers not granted to the federal government in the constitution are left for the states to decide indvidually. It is simply the best and most effective and free form of government that exists today anywhere in the world. NO insults intended

GonePhishing 11-03-2004 09:52 PM

Didn't read any of the thread except for the first question. I am aware that a bunch of debates must have started.

I'll start by saying that I did not vote for Bush. I don't agree with most of what he is doing. Certainly, the administration does not represent an overwhelming majority.

However, there are some things that I was proud of for this country. More people came out to vote. The large portion of new voters were young, first time, and motivated to vote. They voted heavily in favor of Kerry. I appreciated seeing younger people actually register and vote. They didn't get their way, but I'm glad more of them actually showed up. For that matter, I've been proud of the protests and questions too. One way to look at it is like this... The younger generation seems more liberal in their voting tendency and on the increase in terms of actually voting. What they did this election is something to be proud of. What they will may be able to do in the future is hopeful on part.

If that group matures and grows and the population table holds it's current path... There won't be as inverted a population table as there is now in how many more older people there are than younger. Once this takes place, that group will simply have a increasing number against the older group as it thins through the years. Further, as the older population begins to pass on, many minorities and immigrants will take their places. If those voting trends hold, it will not be too long before the demographic of voters and choices change.

Some people would argue whether "it is the best free form of government that exists today"

An interested point, which I haven't seen many people mentioning.

the majority used common sense to vote.

W. knows the UN is the poster child for corrupt international dealings.

We've been safe for the last 3 years and al queda is impotent to do any more damage on our soil.

How's that?

the majority voted based on religious values which shouldnt have anything to do with government (seperation of church and state) and is being safe for 3 years at the expense on 10000 inocent people really something to be proud of?

There are things to be proud of but not those in my opinion
