    Obama elected as lone black senator

    Barack Obama confirmed his status as the rising star of the Democratic party after coasting to victory in Illinois to become the only black US senator.
    Mr Obama, who delivered the most memorable keynote speech of the Democratic national convention in August, easily beat conservative Republican, Alan Keyes.
