any connection, ISDN, DSL, even T-3, because these progs are optimise traffic, mainly graphics/videos/media files/etc. but more preferred to use them with dialup connection yet

Why would you need to accelerate your cable modem anyways ?

The only thing that slows my downloads down is the server speed and not the modem itself! Only once I got stuck on a server... at approx. 890 KB/sec from a McAfee server

At such speeds I can't really use any accelerator anymore Besides: All Windoze users should take a look at http://www.speedguide.net - they have a very useful reg hack for Win9x/2k available that'll squeeze the last bit out of your cable modem hardware. Go try it and compare - I've had some great results in the past.

Equinox is right.

These bandaids are all fine if your system isn't optimized the right way. When you get into "real" bandwidth, optimize the operating system to deal with the proper packet sizes etc. The problem is most systems are shipped optimized (if you can call it that) for dialup. Most of these so called "accelerators" are nothing but caching programs so your favorite sites (liek your Geocities website) load right quick now, ya hear?

Anyway, speeedguide.net has some very knowledgeable people and tips that will help you to squeeze your pipe for what it's worth.

I use Download Accelerator Plus 5.0
I have DSL and usual speeds are around the 120kbs/sec mark. With this program i have gone over 350kbs/sec BUT the file you are getting must be on more then one server, or on a server that has the file on more then one line. It's worth it if you have cable/dsl otherwise it sux.

Download Accelerator Plus taps into any FTP site, port, etc.. that you can use to download files and jumps to the fastest connections.

I ran a test by downloading Star Office from sun.com (75 megs). Normal d/l is 17 minutes, d/l with Download Accelerator Plus is 7 minutes.

some of you have it wrong: DAP helps cable modems *BECAUSE* your cable modem is *NOT* the bottleneck.

DAP gets around it by connecting to the server more than once. this allows (let's say) 4 connections from the server you are downloading from to yourself. this means the server's bandwidth has been multiplied by 4, or the bottleneck has been widened 4 times. now, because your cable modem isn't the bottleneck, and because it can handle more bandwidth, you can now download 4 times faster!

see what i'm saying? (hope so.)

on the other side, a 56k modem (for example) *IS* the bottleneck, so that's why DAP can't help it by connecting multiple times to the server you are downing from.

oh... and the reason connecting 4 times to a server (somtimes) actually speeds it up 4 times, is because some servers have bandwidth limits set on each connection, so no matter how fast your DSL or cable is, you only get XXX bytes/second.

Hmmm...OK, interesting technology and I was mis-informed as to how it worked before.

Yes, some servers might limit bw per connection, but what about the servers that limit to one connection per user? I'm guessing that it won't help then or does it have other tricks up it's sleeve?

I like it, too, but the newest version tries to take over your browser, your computer, and your house. Look out.
