Please Help - Question for the Techies !!!!

I got some fucked up shit going on ....
I use FP2000 and earlier today I had it open and hit a major pop up hell... I was hitting Alt-F4 like a madman and closed everything including FP and my machine restarted. Well, since then I can't run front page. Everything else works fine and I have tried to repair FP with the CD and I have uninstalled and re-installed it 4 times now and it still doesn't work. I keep getting a message saying "FP30WEL.DLL file missing" Now, I have searched for that file on my pc and on my copy of FP and it is nowhere. I am losing my mind trying to get this to work. Why the hell would uninstalling and re-installing the damn program have no effect..?? Someone please give me some magic trick to fix this so I can get some work done.

you can download the dll. HERE

Im still looking around for a good source of info on it, I knew I should never have cleaned out my favorites. thatll get you started though.

Hmmmm doesn't exiat on this terminal either with FP 2000. Try hitting the Windows update site, then the Office Update site. If it ever existed in our FP, it must have been removed in a update and replaced.

Gemini - now I don't get the message. I reinstalled it again and it opens up and then my cursor turns into the little I-beam shape like it's going over web text.... and after a few seconds ctrl-alt-delete reveals that FP is not responding. I've tried it a dozen times. It's not asking for the dll anymore though ???? Now I'm really confused.

As for all you FP bashers... I knew you would be in here and I promised myself I would keep my cool so all I will say is that I will put my FP work up against anything you got... and I can do it in half the time That is if I can ever get it to work again of course

Do a uninstall, defrag, trash emptied and a cold boot. Then reinstall, warm boot and see if it loads. It acts up like that with us every now and again. Not the file part, just won't load up. Usually from the cache being full it seems like. It refuses to load no matter what we do w/o a warm boot.

Ours came with the Office 2000 so it may never even had the file yours wanted. But I do check weekly and do the updates so it may have gotten deleted from that too.

The biggest prob we ever had with 98 was the cache overloads fast and just emptying it without a reboot isn't always the cure all without restarting. So its second nature to defrag etc a couple times a day and restart. Keeps the system/s fast at any rate.

Wilbur -

That article looks like it hit the nail on the head... I did what it said and those files were not there. The problem is finding them. Adammairxxx hooked me up with a link that listed the files but there server is down so I am back to square one.

Gemini -

Very good advice but I have to admit that I am very weak when it comes to tech talk. I have no idea what you mean bu a cold and warm boot. And as for defragging.... I haven't been able to do that for a couple months. When I try it says there's an error and I have to run scan disk before the drive can be defragged and then when I run scan disk it gives me the message that it has re-started 10 times because some other program is using the hard drive or something freaky like that.

If your scandisk restarts 10 times it means your machine has had
one too many "hard" crashes and it's just a matter of time till things
get worse. Your machine must be locking up and crashing alot. Its
"big fix" time.

The file being requested (FP30WEL.DLL) is a WinNT *.dll which is
an internal call from Frontpage2000. FP2000 thinks your OS is NT
which afirms your machine is to the point of no return.

I know this sounds "heavy" but I just call 'em as I see 'em.

That was my worst fear Wilber... but it was also what I knew someone would say. This machine has been thru hell and has had more than it's fair share of "hard" crashes. Just my luck tomorrow is Labor day and nothing is open. 36 hours of downtime.... I will go crazy.

When you run scandisk make sure nothing is running in the background, same when you defrag. Just Ctrl+Alt+Dlt and you should be able to stop just about everything. I always have problems scanning or defraging. However if you still have problems you may well want to invest in another hard drive at the least, and perhaps you may want to take the computer in to someone who can look at it. Im not much help in the Tech support aspect, sorry.

thanks for looking at my gallery earlier and good luck, If you havnt got this fixed Ill ask a guy I know at work on Tuesday, hes our main tech and he really knows his shit.

Later and Good Luck
talk to you all later (if I dont get banned)

Alrightie...

Cold boot - completely shut down, restart after a couple of minutes..

Warm Boot - just restart the system...

Shut off your screen saver to run scandisk and defrag) also any anti-virus progs...

New HD?!?! Go buy Norton Systemworks. It has the best defraggers and such in it. MS Defrag was written by Norton and hasn't really been changed all that much since it was first done. Norton not being a MS fan didn't write it to be that great obviously. But his speed disk smokes the MS version. We can defrag 80 gigs broken into quite a few drives in less time than MS defrag runs a 4 gig disk.

You can also run scandisk from the dos window. C:/>scandisk c: It will pop a windows box with the drives etc for you to choose. (C:/> doesn't have to be what the dos prompt says... currently this terminal would read N:/>Windows in the dos window) I could type the scandisk right there and hit enter, it comes up to run.

That should get you thru the scandisk. If you don't defrag very often, the defrag will take a longer period to run as well. More files are fragmented. So running that daily after dumping the cache and emptying the trash is the best way to insure the system ops at the highest efficiency.

I would go to symantec.com and download the free trial of Norton System works. It is not uncommon for people to find 80-100 problems on their machine the first time they use system check...and scan disk did not find any of those errors!

If scan disk or defrag keeps starting over you can use control alt delete and shut down any programs you are not using. It is safe to shut down everything EXCEPT Explorer and Systray. I think if you shut down Explorer, you are really fucked, but I've never tried, so I can't say.

then he wakes up... was only a dream... weaver...

-------------------------------------------

To kill all those background proggies running that fucks up your defragging... do this...

START BUTTON... RUN... Type in: msconfig
THEN... go to Startup Tab... and uncheck all those boxes... RESTART and then defrag like a muthah

This will solve that problem...

good luck man

Thanks everyone for all your help...
I really appreciate it but none of it worked. I was able to defrag by booting into safe mode and doing it there. That was the only way. I also tried the cold boot (thanks for the lingo lesson Gemini)

I'm just gonna get a new machine I guess. It's time anyway. This pc was put together by Dr. Frankenstein I think. It's just a bunch of parts in a box as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks again folks.
