window and door detectors are great but I think what's the best measure for safety is Common Sense!

I see ADT commercials on TV all the time in the US. They do all kinds of shit.. monitor fire alarms, carbon monoxide levels, and alert authorities or you if somethings wrong.

No glass break sensors, they trip easy. Use the wireless key fob's to turn on and off your system, they also have panic buttons built in, and can also open your garage door or turn on your lights. Some of the Napco systems have great remote capabilities. If you want to turn on or off your system from a phone line or internet connection. You can also control your thermostat remotely, incase you want to save energy while your gone. I owned an Alarm company before I got in this biz. My father also owns a security company too. I was Vice President of the California Alarm Industry (San Diego). How did I end up here?

Most burglar alarms are pretty useless, most people just ignore them. You need one that dials out to the police itself regardless of what detection devices you have.

...and saying a burglar alarm is useless is just plain wrong. In most situations even a non-working alarm will provide huge protection providing it is visible. Thiefs will simply go for easier targets rather than risking an alarm. For detectors motion will do it all really and there's little/no need for anything else. If you have one covering a room/hall with doors or windows in then a decent PIR motion sensor will pick up movement from any entry/exit point. 4 detectors will provide good protection for most property. If you want to be really secure you can also get very cheap CCTV cameras these days. Plug one or two into a multi-port capture card (again pretty cheap) and you can have your PC e-mail or SMS you if they pick up movement and pop along to the nearest internet cafe/laptop point and see what's going on. ![]() |

I have sensors on all the first and 2nd floor doors (if someone wants to climb up to my bedroom sliding glass door on the 3rd floor, they're in because I want to be able to leave it open at night and keep the alarm on), glass breaking sensors around the windows and the smoke alarms hardwired into the system.
If you have pets, getting motion sensors usually doesn't work. I'm also in the process of getting a celluar backup in case the phone line goes down (my lines are all above ground with LOTS of trees). |
