There's a couple of purposes.
1. For those who can't make it on election day, and don't trust absentee ballots. I had my absentee ballot "lost" while I was serving over seas. 2. To give the pollsters and campaign managers real numbers to work with for last minute campaigning.

well one reason is that they see this years election being packed!!! another is some cant make it on the election day!
