John Peel OBE, legendary Radio 1 and Radio 4 presenter, has died suddenly on holiday in Peru.

It has been confirmed that John died from a heart attack last night - he leaves behind his wife Sheila and four children.

It gets downright scarey when so many people of your own generation are popping their clogs.

Apart from him having the same name as one of my godfathers, I shall remember John Peel because he and "whispering" Bob Harris (who fortunately is still alive asfar as I know) did more to promote non-Top20 rock than anyone else in the UK. Without them, there are artists, maybe even whole styles of music, to which we would never have been exposed.

BTW I watched the OGWT 30th Anniversary DVD the other night. If you haven't caught it, there is some excellent music on it and some great nostalgia.

I had a few drinks with John at a BBC party 4 years ago. All he wanted to talk about was music. His job was his life. So many acts owe so much to him. Sex Pistols, Mike Oldfield and many more.

Bob Harris has been on BBC24 talking about him and still does a show on radio 4. I listened to it in the hospital the other night.

Add Tommy Vance to your list and the three of them pretty much broke every band I have ever liked or broke a band the influenced the bands I like to start playing music.

my fave story about him is how he once forgot to que up a record and had to say sorry on air and explain that it was because he was enjoying the song before too much and forgot.

They need to name a stage at Glasto after him. He has been at every single one.

John Peel is responsible for breaking more bands than anyone in the western world.

MOre news here on John.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertain...io/3955289.stm

Although I didn't like his taste in music particularly, he was still a legend and his funeral will be a massive who's who of rock stars from around the globe.

A sad day for music fans.

R.I.P John Peel.

I am ABOSOLUTLY gutted, I might have cried a little at work when I found out. I've never been this upset about the death of someone I never knew.

I shed a few tears and I NEVER do that over celeb deaths. I love my music too much, it means too much to me and I know that so many of them would never have entered my life had he not been the one to give them their break.
