Hospitals Are FUCKING CRAZY With Their Charges !!!

A couple of weeks ago, my son was playing around and got a deep cut on his forhead, so we figured that it was best to bring him in. It was in the evening, so we were forced to go to the emergency room.

They got us into the room right away, then we had to wait for about 45 minutes. Finally the doctor came in, looked at the cut, then recommended that they glue it rather than stitch it. He got a bottle of peroxide and towel to clean it, then he took out a little tube of glue and glued it shut, it took less than 10 minutes.

Well, today I got the bill and here's their charges -

$68.00 M/S Supply Sterile Supply
$130.00 Emergency Room General
$141.00 Emergency Room Other
$321.00 Prof Fees Emergency Room
---------------------------------------------
$660.00 TOTAL

I think that's fucking unreal how they can charge $660.00 to glue a kid's head shut. If it wasn't on his forehead, I probably could've let it slide, but figured that it was in an obvious place that it should be glued to minimize scaring. I never dreamed it'd cost that much, I was thinking more like $400 at most. I sure was wrong.

That's a prime example of dry ass raping.

No, its a prime example of why health insurance is so damn high which causes people to not be able to have it which in turn people cannot afford to pay the hospital bill. What the fuck is so hard to figure out about this?

Yeah, that's true. I know that's a a big problem. However, if they didn't charge so much, more people would pay it. It's too bad that there wasn't any competition in the medical market.., that'd be nice.

Yeah, maybe I should move up to Canada, that's a good idea I could move up to Toronto which is only like 7 hours from where I live now.

ROFL, ha ha. Sure FlyingIguana, I'll be sure to hit you up if it happens again, that'd sure save me a lot of cash.

As far as my philosophy on insurance goes. Right now I'm still kinda young (30), so I'm hoping that I'll be healthy enough to hold out on buying it for a while (knock on wood). I do have a wife and kids, but from what I gather, to get insurance would cost me at like $600 per month and that wouldn't even be great insurance. I'm not the best at price/plan comparisons though because the smartest at all of the terms and shit. I'd hate to just throw that money away like that. I suppose if something major does come up, I'll be fucked though. Once I'm a little older and more prone to problems, I'll get it.

Actually health insurance is so high because they are paying the absurdly high medical bills brought on by deadbeats not paying and medical lawsuits. They then pass on their costs to those purchasing the insurance.

Go directly to human resources and complain. There's a chance the bill can get lowered.

I actually thought about doing that because of the "$141.00 Emergency Room Other" charge. If they already charged me for the room, the stuff they used, and the doctor, what the hell would the "Other" charges be ???

My son was in the hospital for a broken arm. I just got the "pre-insurance" bill. over 4k. I can not believe it. You know the insurance company will probably only pay 100 or something. I do not know how people without insurance manage.

Slick, almost every state has insurance you can get for kids that's $15-20 a month. It has income requirements but if you make more than their max, then you can afford insurance.

There are also catastrophic policies you can get with high deductibles and low monthly payments.

Losing everything you have or filing bankruptcy because of one large cost incident doesn't seem a very smart gamble, IMHO.

If I'm correct you should never have to file bankruptcy over medical bills...I don't think any outstanding medical balances are even allowed to show on your credit report (or atleast if they are shown, they aren't supposed to be considered negatively when you apply for credit)

As far as hospital charges, I agree that they are truly out of this world. I recently delivered my first child and I was in the hospital for 30 hours. Both the baby and myself spent one night in a room before they discharged us because we didn't have any insurance. The bill totaled $6,000 from the hospital and $600 from the pediatrician. I am sooo glad we didn't stay a second night, lol.

you should try riding to the emergency room in a helicopter from 80 miles out,..then take a look at the bill. A friend of mine got in a car crash in the mountains in north georgia and they had to fly her to atlanta. The chopper ride alone was $5,000.00

Health care is not free in Canada unless you make a very tiny amount of money. If you're a professional of any sort you'll be paying something for health care.

Our system is fucking falling apart up here. I'd personally rather get in for surgery and worry about paying the bill later than wait for surgery and die waiting.

Our Medical System in Canada is far from perfect, don't fool yourself.

pretty much agree with you. though it really varies depending on where you are. in Whistler you walk in and someone is looking at you in 10 minutes. in Vancouver or Montreal, it's a fucking joke unless you are dying.

for the Americans: how much would a 10 day hospital stay cost you, with a variety of tests and medication (but without surgery)? any sort of ball park figure you can give me?

5% of direct costs, sure. What percentage does insurance cost though? Cumatively I'll bet it's moer than 5%.

You are incorrect. In fact, medical bills are one of the main reasons for bankruptcy. And of course medical past due accounts can and will show up on your credit report.

Personally I couldn't care less if America had a socialized medical system.

HOWEVER, only if those who opt out and want to have their own insurance don't have to pay into it.

It's my pipedream

I don't know a single person who has filed bankruptcy due to medical bills. I know MANY people who have gone to the emergency room, multiple times, and never paid a cent. They own homes, have new cars, nice credit lines.

Nice smokescreen. Where exactly did I say Bush caused it? But since you brought it up whats your explanation for health insurance going up over 50% since Bush? Oh, almost forgot....its because of Edwards suing doctors....nevermind.

It's so sad to know that hospitals nowadays don't accept patients when there is no downpayment. They make an assurance that once a patient checks in even for check-up only, will pay for the required billing which is quite high.
