Personnal Hosting

Hi All,

I'm planning on hosting some small sites (eg AVS Sites) on my own server (good luck lil DSL) and I'd like to know what you guys suggest to install on my server.

I'd go with redhat/thhpd or zeus webserver.

Any other suggestion? I'd like to run only the webserver on my server... no other crap around... last day the screen saver froze my computer (heck?!?) Do any of who know anythin like that eg. Boot -> webserver and that's it.

Thanks alot for the ones whos gonna answer my lame question

Apache is the way to go. IIS if you are running NT.

Actually, I'm running Apache on NT (WIN2K PRO) right now.... IIS has too many holes open for hacker shit.

If you are going to be using php or perl, the Apache is fine. But if you are using ASP or Cold Fusion then IIS is the way to go.

As for Apache on Win2K, have only run it on NT and wasnt too happy with how it performed. IIS is fine if you keep it updated with patches and have a proper firewall.

Alright, seems apache is the choice of all. I heard thttpd was smoother on the system, but I'm probably wrong

However I don't like that whole crap around my linux (got mandrake)... way too mush useless stuff... all I need is apache running and that's it... I don't want 50 other crap on it. Don't know if that easily possible.

Anyways, thanks everyone for the replies I really appreciate!

Lane: it was rushing your connection that much with only 1500 Uniques? Damn :P I don't think it will affect mine that much... unless I'm stupid enough to serve movies on it... which is not the case... plain html maybe some thumbs but nothing more than that. Also some php but that has nothing to do with the bandwidth... more with my poor backup server resources

Playa: yes this is a personnal project. It's mainly for avs sites or tgp galleries... two kind of sites for free loaders that can cost money for nothing to host... I have a dsl connection... but it is quite reliable... I can stay connected non stop for weeks without problem (router) and my server will be dedicated so no frequent need to reboot.

It is not in any way for something that needs to be up 100%, 99% will be okay and I can achieve that easily :P

(That's like hosting for 10,000 AVS sites for free when you think about it... I don't care it's slow heh )

wiZd0m: where you at in montreal?

Are you sure that's a good idea? I mean, if Im not mistaken, DSL is normally limited to 128K upload. If you get moderate traffic, the d/l speed on the client side may be very slow.

I'm in no way looking for 150k/day on this one... maybe just a little avs traffic as it is productive traffic or at worst only a personnal page... nothing big... I have paid hosting and don't plan on changing this. But having a personnal server can always be of use! I have a server doing nothing over it and I want it to be a webserver, but at least I want it to run smooth even if it can't handle much I hate that mandrake thing... too much useless stuff making my server unefficient. Anyone knows a good prog/package to install on my server?

Thanks everyone for your support and doubts heh

Thanks equinox

What I plan on using now is: Apache/PHP/Mysql/Wu-FTPd...

But what I want to get rid of is mandrake... any suggestions? Mandrake is maybe good for the average user cuz it's full of goodies and crapies... but I don't need anything else installed then apache and the rest

RedHat 7.1 or if you're hardcore use Debain or even worse, Slackware

I don't even wanna get started with Slackware, that's (still) beyond my knowledge. But try RedHat 7.1. You can download the ISOs legally at linuxiso.org
