How long is reasonable for a designer to wait to be paid?

If you took a very large project with no money up front and gave the client a discount, and you completed the project and delivered it, how long do you think is reasonable to wait for payment?

I would think 2 days, they knew the price, they knew the delivery date more than likely, they should have no excuse to hold out longer than a few days.

I would never hire anyone without having the money already available for them upon completion. Doing it any other way is pretty shady.

I think 2 weeks, depending on where its coming from 5 - 7 days in the mail and another week max to get the payment taken care of is about right.

I usually pre pay my design work and only work with established, trusted designers.

That being said, I'd say 5-7 days is a reasonable grace period. The payment should be on it's way by then.

LadyMischief has been waiting for a very sizable company to make good on their debt for design work since October of last year. There's been much corrispondence about it and they just never seem able to cough up the $150. Sad that it's such a small amount. It'd be nice if they'd actually pay, sucks having to explain a $150 AR to your accountant.

What about if they are supposed to pay by other methods like wire transfer, Western Union, ePassporte, etc?

I hope this was a repeat client, otherwise why would you do such a silly thing? Only put up what you can afford to lose.

Why would you deliver a completed project without taking full payment?

Trust. I had never worked for them before but they seem to have a solid reutation. I won't do that again, for sure.

Also, I needed the money really badly. I gave the client a price for 50% up front and I offered the client a discount if he'd pay 100% up front, but he offered to buy more if I'd discount even further and take nothing up front.

I would say 5 days on that, Some companies send out payments when they pay webmasters. 2 weeks should be the max no matter how they pay though.

Like WarChild said I normally pay upfront but then again I only do business with designers I trust.

Depending on way of payment, 2 weeks for offline payment, 1 week for online payment.

A solid reputation based on what? Unfortunately, those who seem to have great reputations often don't.

Hope you get your money soon.

Well, I'd never seen any complaints about them. Unfortunately I saw a thread a couple of days after I completed the first round of work where someone else had a late payment for some work from them, too. I was already pretty far into the project by then, though, and I'd made a committment to do the work without payment up front. I always do my best to honor my committments.

I pay in house people every two weeks.

For outsourced it depends on the deal structured, but usually after its completed and functioning properly. But if I got bumped or jerked along the way then 30 days or longer like any other bill.

If they are a partner in a project also they get paid on a partner timeline.

If it was a large account you should have setup a contract...

Just keep the pressure on, that should work.

You really should discuss these things upfront and in no uncertain terms, a contract wouldn't hurt. Also don't do shit without a deposit, especially first time customers. Everytime I do, I get screwed.

Without these precautions, I guess 2 weeks to a month is reasonable, again this should be spelled out in your invoice, after that hit them up with collection notices.

Good luck, sorry to hear about this..

Well, I feel it's very important to respect my clients' privacy. I wouldn't bring something like that public unless I really felt there was no hope of being paid and it had come to the point of basically warning people to avoid doing business with them.

I understand... Doing contracting myself sometimes it's hard to close a deal without agreeing to full payment upon completion, especially with a new client who is suspicious of scammers.

I've never delivered without getting paid, but I have put in many hours of work and been shafted at the end before.

You're a known designer and anything but upfront doesn't make sense to me beside the person has a very good reason why no money is avaible upfront.

Thirty days.

Some of us in this industry are a business. This means standard business models apply.

You do the work and submit an invoice or bill. The company then has thrity days to cut you a check.

If you were to do graphics or webpage work at my request for Lightspeed Cash, when the project is completed to my satisfcation you submit a bill to me. I enter it into my records, and then pass it off to our accountant for payment. Depending on her workload is when the check gets cut. Allow a week for snail mail.......

Ask for Cash UP FRONT. If they don't want to do it, then WALK AWAY QUICKLY. A legit operation will pay UP FRONT.

I'm waiting on a client right now. Huge problems on both ends for this project. Complained about things coming in late. Now payment is coming in late. Fair enough if it was 50/50 but its all 100% unpaid for. I have a feeling I'll get burned.

BTW, when I do contract work I'll wait about a week past the date they SAY they'll pay me before I start prodding them... Another week before I bring out the big guns.

Tootie, someone with your rep and skills should NEVER have to work without up-front money. I'm sure you've got lots of good references, so they should trust you.

When I can't get that, I usually complete part of the job and require partial payment before I complete it. UNLESS the company has really good references.

I made the mistake of bending policy once for a company that SEEMED solid... had a hell of a time getting paid.

i never started a project without an upfront payment.. if it's a big one, at least have a 50% downpayment and the rest before you turnover the completed design.

Make sure you remind them.

One time I thought I sent payment when I actually forgot to. It wasn't until he reminded me that I realized I forgot to send it and I sent it right away.

I've reminded them about it every day. I even explained how urgent it was and I was told I'd be sent a wire Monday, but it didn't arrive and Monday night they apologized and said they'd take a look at the stuff I sent but I didn't get paid today, either.

Fucking assholes! Tootie, if they live in California, give me a ring on ICQ and I will get the money out of them ;) If they don't, put a price tag on them and I'll get it anyway.

Thanks for the designs you had done for me, I have only had time to impliment 2 of them but I am getting around to doing the others too. Work is always awesome and more than I expected.

Who ever you are, not paying Tootie, quit fucking around or you will have an industry on your ass.

Always get at least half pre-paid on any online design project. Any reputable company will be willing to pre-pay at least half, if not all upfront.

I've reminded them about it every day. I even explained how urgent it was and I was told I'd be sent a wire Monday, but it didn't arrive and Monday night they apologized and said they'd take a look at the stuff I sent but I didn't get paid today, either.
Sounds like a guy we did some sites for.
He was always going to send payment on Friday.
Then it was his partner that would send it next friday... and so on and so on. Took about a month and a half before we finally recieved payment and even then it was $15 shy. :P
Was just happy to finally get it.

Hope you get it all worked out tootie!

Tottie,

Sorry you have to deal with "slow payers"

We don't ask for payment upfront, but we do expect payment as soon as the designs are done or within 1-3 days. Depends on wire time, company checks, etc.

Best of luck

Todd

Well, I feel it's very important to respect my clients' privacy. I wouldn't bring something like that public unless I really felt there was no hope of being paid and it had come to the point of basically warning people to avoid doing business with them.
Sounds good hun.
