Are your kids on Anti-depressants?

I am not sure if this was ever posted on GFY, so I am going to do it, I know there was a recent discussion about kids and ADHD and so on and I want to make sure everyone with these drugs needs to REALLY be paying attention here, this is some serious shit.

Anti Depressants get blackbox warning

Quote:
"Today's actions represent FDA's conclusions about the increased risk of suicidal thoughts and the necessary actions for physicians prescribing these antidepressant drugs and for the children and adolescents taking them," said Dr. Lester Crawford, acting FDA commissioner.
If your kids are on any of the drugs listed here, PLEASE make sure and watch them!!

Quote:
The new warnings, however, will be carried by all antidepressants, including Anafranil, Aventyl, Celexa, Cymbalta, Desyrel, Effexor, Elavil, Lexapro, Limbitrol, Ludiomil, Luvox, Marplan, Nardil, Norpramin, Pamelor, Parnate, Paxil, Pexeva, Prozac, Remeron, Sarafem, Serzone, Sinequan, Surmontil, Symbyax,Tofranil, Tofranil-PM, Triavil, Vivactil, Wellbutrin, Zoloft and Zyban.

I'm sorry if this has been posted here, I seen it a few days ago and I can't get it out of my head... I know a lot of kids are on this shit these days.

I think putting kids on drugs like anti-depressants, unless they have a severe mental disability like schizophrenia or the like, is just nuts.
It's too easy a "solution" for parents who find it hard to control their children within their busy schedules.
Name a kid who doesn't get depressed, especially teenagers. It's part of being a teenager, for christ's sake.
At the rate we're going there's going to be a generation of drugged out zombies incapable of having emotions of their own.

I take effexor. God I'm so suicidal.

Actually I'm probably the happiest I've ever been in my life now that I found medication that works

EXACTLY... I have a 10 year old that they have been trying to get me to have tested since he was in Kindergarten.. and I simply will NOT do it. He's a handful, yes, but he isn't any worse than any other little BOY... they want to put him on it because he is too quiet in school. He makes A's and B's, but they think he has some kind of disorder because he is quiet. FUCKERS!!! I'd really hate to see what they did with a child that was a REAL troublemaker....... but then most of THEIR parents will listen to the schools and put those kids on this shit.

The only way my kids will ever be on any kind of drugs like this is if their lives depended on it and I told them this..... but now it looks like being on it is even more of a risk.

Like the one woman said on CNN when I seen it...... I am NOT playing Russian Roulette with my child's life!!!

There was a Dr on there that said that in some kids, it makes them 10000 times better, but in those that it doesn't completely help, it is a risk to their lives. But who's to know who it is going to help and who it isn't til it is too damn late? Yikes! I am happy it is helping you though.... seriously. I have seen it go both ways.... I seen one woman go completely out of her mind and lose her kids, house and everything she knew after starting on ... I think it was Paxil she was on and it fucked her up.

This is an area where most of my collegues and professors are absolutely furious. Over prescription of drugs to take place of underparenting.

Granted, there are some children and adults who actually NEED the help of drugs, but the number is far less than is thought. In the Unites States, there are over 60 million adults on some form of medicinal therapy. Statistically, 5 out of every 1000 kids are on drugs of this type.

Most of the time, these kids just need behavioral modification or dietary changes to get back on track. But a lot of parents just don't have the time to deal with it; they're working or in classes or something something something. It's just easier to give the kids drugs and send them on their way. And that's sad.

Oh come on tam you're sort of blowing things out of proportion aren't you? The ammount of people who've commited suicide who take anti-depressant medications is probably comparible to the ammount of people who commit suicide who probably would have benefited from anti-depressants.

The first thing my parents thought of when I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and depression was how to make me feel better, and be happier. Being depressed isnt something you can just get over, and being afraid of leaving the house is something thats paralyzing. All meds do is help your brain produce more or less of different chemicals. In my case with my anxiety disorder, my brain was producing to much of one chemical, and not enough of another. Effexor balances the chemical levels out.

And contrary to popular belief, people who take medication for anxiety and depression disorders are not "spaced out" or "zombies". I'm the exact same person I was when I was struggling with anxiety and depression. The medication I take leaves me feeling completely normal.

WHOA WHOA WHOA........ I never said there aren't people helped by this or that there aren't people who actually HAVE disorders... MY thing is parents who put their kids on drugs that can be better helped with a little attention and some discipline. In almost EVERY case in my particular area of the world, EACH child could stand a little discipline...... they have no fucking disorders, they have what's called "MOM, I need some attention or I am going to do whatever it takes to get it"!!

I have NO issues with the ones this is given to that actually NEED it, in fact, I am all for it. What I have issues with are people who give it to their kids to help THEMSELVES, not their children. So believe it or not, I am on your side on this.... but I have very strong, passionate issues with parents who give it to their kids as a copout to their own parenting skills. THAT makes me fucking crazy like nothing else.

I have lived the majority of my life with some sort of anxiety or another..... from an extremely abusive childhood to being horrified to even sleep at night for fear someone was going to beat me half to death in my sleep at night. From the age of 7 until I was like 34, I didn't want to sleep because when I was 7 my own father beat me so bad in my sleep that the Drs said by all rights I should have been dead.... all because he was mad at my mom. So TRUST me, I know about disorders, I am all about that...... but when a parent wants to squelch his/her child's entire childhood because they don't want to take the time to TEACH them, THAT makes me completely crazy.

So please don't come at me saying I am over reacting, I am not at all over reacting...... MORE parents need to over-react if this is what you call this...... MORE parents should pay attention to their CHILD's needs and not so much their own!!!

I have a 16 year old daughter who has been on Paxil for several years. It has made the difference between disaster and success. She was in bad shape before Paxil and is doing well now.

That's great, but I'd almost be willing to bet you didn't put her on it to better YOURSELF, but you were more concerned about her and she was actually sick, right? The majority don't do this..... if she is doing better and you put her on it for the right reasons, then you are one of the few and one of the ones I have respect for. ;)

Take my son for example, he is quiet in school, he makes very good grades, he is, for the most part, respectful. BUT once he doesn't like you, he will shut you out like a bad habit.... and he shuts down. THIS doesn't make him have ADHD to me, this makes those teachers assholes.... and instead of fixing themselves and finding out what is wrong in their own world's, their first response is to put them on drugs. In MY case, the majority of the kids in the class my son was in last year were doing horrible, they were horrified of her. I got my son out of that class and into a different one and he excelled from there...... he went from the bottom 5, 3 weeks behind in the other class to top 5, 2 weeks ahead of his new class........ so THIS is what they wanted to put on ADs? And the sad part is that when MOST parents have to go thru this, they will just do as the teachers say and put them thru this and not even attempt to get to the bottom of it. Oh, yeah, some will, but most won't. They somehow think the teachers must always be right, NOT fair or healthy for the kids.

Attention Deficit Disorder ADD and depression are not the same. They have perscribed drugs for ADD for kids for years. We went through this same routine with an older son years ago, we said no.

I make no claim of being a doctor but what you are describing does not sound like ADD. ADD is if he cannot sit down long enough or focus long enough to do anything.

Stop feeding your kids McBurgers, ToxicBell, SugarPuffs, Crackacola, and all the other junk-food. Start fucking cooking well-balanced meals (FRESH, Not boxed or pre-packaged shit).

Your children are missing vital minerals in their diets that are condusive to their growth and mental development. Namely because of this "Fast-Food Society" that we live in.

Take the time to insure that your children and yourselves are getting proper nutrition and dietary needs and you will not need to be on anti-depressants. Of course, it also helps if you have an exercise program in place.

Nothing beats a good diet and exercise. You can't take it's place with perscriptsions and therapy.

That's what I have tried to tell them..... I am not a Dr either, but this surely doesn't sound like that to me.... and there's no way in hell they are putting him on a damn thing.

Pornweaver, when asked, my kids will take veggies and such over junk food any day of the week. They aren't huge candy and junk food freaks. They eat broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, and all that stuff you don't associate with kids... we don't eat a lot of takeout unless it is like Chinese food with tons of vegetables and so on. They just aren't into that. They eat good healthy stuff at school for breakfast and lunch and I cook a meat and at least two veggies every night for dinner. I love to cook, so they always eat good... LOL

NOW take cokes, they drink on average of one a day.... but mostly they love water, and most often, they will drink water with their meals, by choice...

I have just always been a big veggie lover and have started them all eating them from babies. Kids tend to eat what Mom eats, or most I have seen, and since I always ate them, so do they.
