If you have at least 400k to invest you can do it.

Other than that, well. You're fucked.

Unless you are a doctor..

Or that you have an excellent reason to claim refugee status. George Bush being an asshole isn't good enough..

Immigrating to Canada - How are immigrants selected?

Essentially, there are five basic classes of immigrants - skilled worker, business, family sponsored, live-in caregiver and refugees.

Skilled worker class

A skilled worker is someone who has at least one year of work experience within the past 10 years in management, professional, technical, skilled trades and paraprofessional occupations as outlined in the National Occupational Classification. Generally, applicants who are employed in these occupations would have completed a higher level of education. So the trend favors applicants who have post secondary credentials with several years of skilled work experience.

Here are the selection grids for skilled worker class:

* Education (max. 25 points)
* Official languages of English and/or French (max. 24 points)
* Experience (max. 21 points)
* Arranged employment approved by HRDC* (max. 10 points)
* Age between 21 and 49 (max. 10 points)
* Adaptability (max. 10 points)

*Human Resource Development Canada
For Immigration Canada to consider your case, you have to score 67 points on the above selection grids and more. Want to find out if you qualify? Please complete our FREE evaluation form.

Business class

To qualify as business immigrants, you must demonstrate you have the ability, experience and resources to establish or invest in a business. There are three categories of business immigrants, Investors, Entrepreneurs and Self-employed.

Investors

This program, Immigrant Investor Program or IIP, came into effect on April 1, 1999. Under this program, an applicant has to make a CAD$400,000 investment to the Federal Government (Receiver General) of Canada for five years. This investment is fully guaranteed by the participating provincial and territorial governments. After five years, the money is refunded to the investor without interest. You may borrow from Canadian financial institutions to make the CAD$400,000 investment. Contact us for details.

In order to qualify for this program, the applicant must have:

* A net worth of at least CAD$800,000 acquired through his/her own business endeavours or investments
* Successfully operated, controlled or directed a business or commercial undertaking
* Invested CAD$400,000 with the Receiver General of Canada
* Score a minimum of 35 points on the modified selection system

Business experience (max. 35 points)
Age (max. 10 points)
Education (max. 25 points)
Official languages (max. 24 points)
Adaptability (max. 6 points)

Investors can apply at any one of the nine overseas Canadian Business Immigration Centres: Beijing, Hong Kong, London, Paris, Berlin, Seoul, Singapore, Damascus, & Buffalo. Contact us for the appropriate centres to use.

Investors may settle in any province, except Quebec. This is because Quebec has its own Immigrant Investor Program. Under the Quebec Immigration Investor Program, the investors must intend to settle in the province of Quebec. Once the application is accepted, Quebec Government will issue the applicant a Certificat de sélection du Québec (CSQ). The applicant then submits the CSQ together with the other applications to the Canadian Embassy.

Benefits of the Immigrant Investor Program:
-Does not have to start a business or manage a business
-Investment is guaranteed by the government
-No immigration terms and conditions are imposed
-Once accepted, all family members are allowed to immigrate
-You can choose to live anywhere in Canada (outside of Quebec)

Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs must be experienced business persons. They are required to make a substantial investment in a business or commercial venture in Canada, thereby creating employment and contributing to the economy of Canada. They are also expected to be actively involved in managing the business.

So, to qualify as entrepreneur immigrants, the applicant must:

* Have a net worth of CAD$300,000
* Intend and have the ability to establish, purchase or invest in a business within three years of arrival
* Contribute significantly to the economy
* Actively manage the business
* Employ one other Canadian permanent resident or citizen
* Score a minimum of 35 points on the modified selection system (similar to investor class)

The entrepreneurs are usually admitted pursuant to terms and conditions, which require the entrepreneurs to establish or purchase and operate a business within three years of arriving in Canada. The immigration officials monitor the entrepreneur's progress through regular reporting intervals.

Self-employed

Self-employed persons must have the intention and ability to create their own employment. They must also make a significant contribution to the cultural, artistic or athletic life of Canada. They can create their own employment by purchasing a farm in Canada.

Traditionally, this is for individuals who have special skills, e.g. professional athletes, artists, painters, actors, dancers, musicians, writers and farmers. It is not intended for those seeking employment. The business can be a sole-proprietor, a partnership, a corporation, or any other form of business organizations.

Family Sponsorship

Canadian citizens or permanent residents age 19 or over, living in Canada, may sponsor ?close? family members to immigrate to Canada.
These family members include:

* Spouse
* Fiancé (e)
* Dependent son or daughter
* Adopted dependent children
* Father or mother
* Grandfather or grandmother
* Relatives like brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, who are orphans unmarried and under 19

Nephews and nieces may not qualify for family sponsorship, but as skilled worker applicants, they will score points based on the relatives in Canada factor.

Live-in Caregivers

Immigrants who come in under this special program are individuals who have the qualifications to care for children, elderly and disabled in a private household. This is because there is a shortage of live-in care workers in Canada.

The successful applicants receive an employment authorization, allowing them to work in Canada as live-in caregivers. After two years, the applicants then apply to become permanent residents provided they meet certain requirements.

There are three main requirements.

* Successfully completed the equivalent of a Canadian high school education.
* Either six months of full-time training or 12 months of experience in paid employment in a field or occupation related to the job you are seeking as a live-in caregiver. E.g. early childhood education, geriatric care, pediatric nursing or first aid.
* Ability to speak, read and understand either English or French.

An important requirement of the program is that the applicants must live in the employer's home.

Believe it or not, it is actually easy to meet those requirments. And the poeple in Canada Immigration aare pretty cool about a lot of stuff.

I think that the US Embassy you need to deal with is in Buffalo.

Good luck man, and send us a few photos of the move.

I'm sure lots of people would, seeing how the US is now the most hated country in the world. I just watched F9/11. Don't get me started.

Everyone thinks the grass is greener on the other side.

Me included.

Cali is my favorite place in the world and I would do anything to live there permanently.

Many reasons... not least is some freedom.

There are more "escapees" from the US where I am than from almost any other nation. The reasons are all basically the same.

Hell.. they even complained as a group to the cable companies, to get the last of the US TV channels off their list and put on some programming with sense and some value

Its a fucking bitch. I have been dealing with Canadian Immigration for over two years now and I have gotten no where and I am married to a Canuk.

If not for my wife needing to be here for another year of so I would haul my ass out of this country as fast as possible.

Someone said earlier the grass is always greener on the other side, trust me, they were right. I always thought Canada would be great to live in, but now I can't wait to move back home.
