Just wanted to add a big :thumbsup as it's sorely needed.
The x number of posts thing is a great idea too. It wouldn't even need to be high to keep the crap from eating up resources be it DOS attacks or bots. |
Nice! I can't wait to search for "party goat" every morning. :Graucho
|
Can't wait:thumbsup

Great lens!
good luck :winkwink: |
That's good news:)
I am sure your tech has already read this, but it might give him some ideas to read what other large forum admins have done to deal with the search problem: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=111239 The three things that come out of the discussion is: -Obviously, use a separate server to serve the search queries, and only synch that server once a day or every few days. This doesn't show the latest posts, but then again those posts are much easier to find by browsing the forum directly. -Use the fulltext search hack to get rid of the search tables created by vbulletin. -Disable the display results by thread, and only display results by posts. This allows you to get rid of all the table joins and makes everything much faster Some people in that discussion are running boards with 5 million or more posts as well, and they can bring valuable infos to your tech. |
Cool, and thanks for the work you put into GFY. :thumbsup There are those who do appreciate it.

Ah, nothing like a good search I say :)

Great idea. Been thinking that for a while. :thumbsup |
I like the membership idea.
Post count idea is a bad one since it's zero guarantee of anything, in terms of capturing working webmasters. (Not to say there aren't working webmasters with high post counts - but it's an absolutely unreliable indicator). Some of us come here primarily to search, not post = business to those who come here to promote their services. |

very good :thumbsup

if I was gonna do it, I'd create 2 databases on the search server ... one with a crontab cleaner or somethin so i only shows the last 500,000 posts (or maybe even less) ...
Then have a "search all" checkbox to determine which one, default unchecked ... faster searches since most people dont need to search 1999's threads heh |
YIPEE! :) Thanks, Lens!! :thumbsup
|
Great news!!!
Only people with [ INSERT MY POST COUNT HERE] and up should be able to search! ;) |
What about changing the MySQL queries in search.php to ORDER BY date and then LIMIT to a reasonable number?
|
sounds awesome! :thumbsup cant wait for it to be up @!
|
great news, i wont have to PM the mods anymore...
|
Lensman, don't be fooled by those who post crap non-stop like baddog. Board Whores should not be given search privileges over those who post less frequently. Quality posts are much more important than the ridiculous threads which appear here daily with no substance.
Every site worth a damn has a good search feature. GFY is way overdue for neglecting this part of the site. |
Can't wait to see it up and running :thumbsup

Annoying that it's been down for a week? Sure. But there's worse things in life. I quoted MicroChick to say the same thing. Lensman isn't stupid and knows that there are alot of "Players" that don't have 15,000 + posts. Not worried in the least about it. Although I DO like the paid membership Tiers-Free to post and view, pay for the priviledge to search. NOT pay PER search though. THAT would blow :winkwink: |
nice! :thumbsup
|
Excellent. GFY is a much better resource when the search is working.
:thumbsup |

You think those advertising spots on GFY are free? |
Quote:
obviously I see your point... if Lens offers VIP, then don't pay but I'd pay to have real-time searching... because I know I'd use it often. |
Taboo, charging for the use of the search feature does not bother me all that much. Everyone is charging for something. I do hate to see the "free" use of so many sites be replaced by monthly fees. Hell, I am still stuck back in the 90's when Art Bell's archives were free, Napster was for everyone (free of charge), and developers were breaking down your door to offer you free usage of their latest programs without restrictions. Remember when Microsoft didn't charge for tech support?
Oh, the good old days! What does get to me is the thought of GFY idiots getting free use of the search feature strictly because they have a large number of posts beside their names. BOO TO THAT !!!!:( |
