Question For European Webmasters.

What ISP's do you guys have over there? Im traveling to UK, France and Italy next week, and want to bring my laptop, but MSN doesnt have international numbers to dial into!!
Do you have urls of any ISP's that I can maybe join for a month while Im traveling in Europe? Here in the US I can get Earthlink, but they want to charge me 15 cents a min for when I go to Europe.

I need to stay connected to the internet for the month I am in Europe traveling, and want to know what the best way to do this is.

Internet cafe's have been suggested, but ftp and icq access will be limited.

What is the cheapest route for these 3 countries, or am I stuck paying 15 cents a minute with earthlink on top of their monthly fee?

I think you best get an account of somebody on the board and share this like you said, there are numerous providers in each country you just stated. For about less than 1$ an hour this would be no problem.

However, I am from the Netherlands, I could be wrong

Boneprone, will you dialup from the hotels ?
I don't know about European hotels, but some hotels charges expensive taxes per minute.

I am assuming that the hotels will not charge a per minute rate for a local dialup call. Most hotels do charge a fee for using the phone, but it should be a flat fee based on a per call basis for local calls.

I dont plan on sharing with someone their isp, I just want to know of a cheap isp for Europe that I can subscribe to so I dont have to resort to using and sigining up for earth link.

Okay, this is usefull info

1, we do have another way of paying phonecalls here than in the USofA, we DO get charged by the minute, also local calls!!
2, there are enough free hosts here (be quick, they're going bankrupt fast ), so that would not be a problem UNLESS you do not live here... so you must at least know someone OR lie and tell them you just moved but have not yet gotten the address and such

Good luck!

Your best option is to signup with AOL. £15/mo you get unmetered access and it can be used across Europe. There are other providers, such as British Telecom Internet, Freeserve, Tiscali, etc. but they are all extremely crap and VERY slow. Most dialup ISPs in the UK are fly-by-night companies, connections are extremely poor and don't sustain. You're extremely lucky if you can stay connected to many-a British ISP for more than 60 minutes without a dropped connection. Thank GOD for NTL Telewest!

A good choice would be to signup for an ISP that offers access on a pay-per-minute basis. Depending on the telecom provider that you hook into, it can cost anything between £0.45 and £3 per hour, but you won't have a subscription cost. I like NetDirect by Ision Internet, but as for France and Italy... I have no idea.

Also take a look at Net 4 Nowt ("nowt" being nothern slang for "nothing" ) at http://www.net4nowt.com/

"I am assuming that the hotels will not charge a per minute rate for a local dialup call. "
-------------------------------------

You know what assuming does I assume. ;-}

Most of the US hotels that do charge flat rate for local calls have started tagging per minute charges onto calls over a certain time limit and the Euro system is nothing like ours.

You'd best call the hotels that you think you might want to stay in and find out their policy before you do anything with an acct.

You may find that doing satellite, which is not cheap, may still be your best answer. Some friends of mine went on vacation out of the way not that long ago and the hotel tagged them with a 1400 dollar access charge for 4 days.

Phonecall from hotels are VERY expensive compared to the US. You might want to check on the rates. I use compuserve when I travel. AOL owns 'em, so AOL should have a solution too I guess

Indeed, Compuserve is the best way to travel through Europe. Their nodes aren't that reliable, though, so make sure you have a bunch of dial-in numbers with you.

If you'd want to use your mobile to connect, make sure it supports 900 or 1800-machines. You can also hire them at airports or buy a prepaid card (I'd suggest Orange as they're somehow internationally available).

When looking around, you'll also find a lot of cybercafé's; most charge between $2-4 per hour.

Hotels DO charge on a per minute base. Local calls cost around $2c/minute in Europe, double them and you have the hotel charge. Ask before connecting though or you could find a surprise when leaving.

Enjoy Europe !!

any others? Or should I stick with these.

It seems these are good cause I can signup here in the US, and cancel when I get home.

I just hope there arent connection problems with these isp's.. But they are pretty good names, so I should be ok.

I believe you will find Internet cafes almost everywhere you go. Have a cup-o-joe and get online. Of course, not all of them will appreciate it if you have a close-up of an ass-fucking scenario on the screen.

I dont think the internet cafe's will have ftp access or icq logons??

Thats what I really need, not just email. No one really sends me email but those fuckers that send me 20 viruses a day.

I really need my icq to check messages, and ftp for minor site updates.

But I may just have to settle with cafes more often, and laptop on a minium basis.

Looks like AOL is the best choice thus far.
I think I may just pic up a free cd of aol in a magazine in London when I get there.

I will have earthlink installed just in case before I leave the US though.

Maybe it isn't much help, but if you find yourself stranded without Internet access, then
http://www.webftp.co.uk/

is useful for moving things around, renaming files, etc when you're away from home.

Ok, I have compuserve and earthlink all set up in my laptop.

I also plan to grab a AOL CD from a magizine in London when I get there to load into my pc.

I should be ok.. But I am still shocked that the local calls are so spendy.

Of those UK ISPs that were mentioned about the majority require you to be a British Telecom customer. That and the fact that they are crap (most dump you every hour or two and you have to dial back in) keeps me on AOL *spit*. If the hotel you are in isn't a BT customer you wouldn't be able to use the account. AOL on the other hand doesn't care who your phone carrier is. We have used our AOL in a couple of London hotel rooms with little problems. Just make sure you know the charges before hand. The hotel I was in on Saturday required me to swipe my credit card before I hooked the modem up but didn't list the rate. I had to call the desk to find out.
