it said he was 59 and that he was given $100 when he left. You can bet he will soon have a lot more than that and will live whatever is left of his life in luxury when the lawyers get done with the state

17 years of his life and he gets a whole $100 from the government. What can this guy do? Can't go on Social security, still under 65. It'll be hard for him to get a job because of being 59.

It'll be hard to do anything. I feel for the guy!

That is true, because with the evidence that the state left out that showed him to be innocent, he can probably get money.

But I've never heard of one of these guys getting money for being falsely accused and sentenced to a crime they didn't commit.

I think every single person who believes in capital punishment should be forced to spend 5 minutes with this guy and explain why.

In Canada we have had three high profile cases of guys wrongfully convincted of rape/murder. David Milgarde spent 22 years in jail. He did not qualify for parole because he did not admit "his guilt".

Donald French spent about 11 years, and Guy Paul Moran about 6. In each case the police were extremely prejudiced, and did not choose to investigate alternatives.

Currently, we have Paul Baltovich appealing his murder conviction, for which he spent 4 years in jail. He is **out on bail**. That is how bad the case against him is. All circumstancial. Almost certainly bad guy Paul Bernardo killed his girlfriend, not him.

                                Such is justice in Canada.

This is why I am not for capital punishment. Unless there is proof that the person is 200% the person that commited the crime. But is almost 90% of the time to be that positive on a conviction.

yep it looks like they had evidence that proved he was innocent and still pushed on. I've seen some documentry films and stuff about cases like this where they have evidence that proves innocence but still press it so they can make themselves look good. I wouldn't be able to live with myself knowing that I helped put away an innocent person.

Also, there are cases where these people end up getting money. 99% of them are settled out of court because the cities/states know they have no chance of winning in court and want to avoid a potentially massive loss and all the bad publicity a court case would bring.

I can see the lawyer saying to the state " a jury gave a woman that spilled hot coffee on herself 1 million dollars. The coffee cup said hot on it and the menu listed it as hot coffee and they still gave her a cool million. Imagine what they are going to give my client when we tell them he just spent 17 years in jail for a crime he didn't commit while you guys had evidence that proved he was innocent. . ." At which time the state/city shits itself and asks what they want.

Makes me think of Shawshank Redemption, I feel bad for the poor guy, the judicial system is a heartless inhuman government branch! I hope he owns that city, but that still won't give him 17 years of his life back....

Yeah but most of the time the guys who were convicted had been known ciminals so they looked guilty to the jury.
