As US officials in Iraq were counting the cost of the devastating suicide attack in Baghdad's green zone, Defence Department insiders in Washington said that the Pentagon is angling to promote Lieutenant-General Ricardo Sanchez, who ran prisons in Iraq at the time of the abuses in Abu Ghraib jail.
Senior Pentagon officials, including the Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard Myers, have told colleagues they are determined to pin a fourth star on General Sanchez. Mr Rumsfeld and others recognise that General Sanchez remains politically "radioactive," according to an unnamed Defence Department official, and would wait until after the presidential election next month and continuing investigations of the Abu Ghraib affair have faded before putting his name forward. something is wrong with this world http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/...784050044.html http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...sanchez15.html |
