They were free? Really? How did it work? What stopped someone from registering hundreds of amazing keyword domains?

I remember in 97, it was $100 for 2 years.

IIRC in 96 and before (maybe it was earlier, not 100% sure) you would tell the registry you had legit business interest in the given domain name. It was a manual process on both sides, I believe.

You could make a counter argument that adult domains will become more valuable depending on your prism. Bush stayed away from the adult business this go round because of terrorism, and you can argue the same thing will happen again.

they weren't setup that way, but They were indeed free, but it took awhile to process ( 2 weeks )
