Google Desktop Search!

Damn! This is very cool. Using google technology to search your own computer! It searches pics, txt files, etc, and outlook e-mails. This is bad ass, I just installed it.

Find your email, files, web history and chats instantly
View web pages you've seen, even when you're not online
Search as easily as you do on Google

After downloading Google Desktop Search, you can search your personal items as easily as you search the Internet using Google. Unlike traditional computer search software that updates once a day, Google Desktop Search updates continually for most file types, so that when you receive a new email in Outlook, for example, you can search for it within seconds. The index of searchable information created by Desktop Search is stored on your own computer.

In addition to basic search, Google Desktop Search introduces new ways to access relevant and timely information. When you view a web page in Internet Explorer, Google Desktop Search "caches" or stores its content so that you can later look at that same version of the page, even if its live content has changed or you're offline. Google Desktop Search organizes email search results into conversations, so that all email messages in the same thread are grouped into a single search result.

So is Google going to compile the information from those searches?

I mean, that was part of the outcry with Gmail wasn't it? invasion of privacy?

So we keep giving Google more and more input into our daily lives and they will get stronger and more knowledgeable, and hopefully they won't get corrupted with all the info they have.

Google labs comes up with some pretty nifty stuff, but remember they also like to compile huge databases of information for better targeting.

And yes, I'm sometimes paranoid.. ...but in today's society I think you kinda have to be

Neat toy but I don't use any of the formats that it can search other than text. I don't use AIM, Outlook, IE or MS Office.

What information does Google receive?

By default, Google Desktop Search collects a limited amount of non-personal information from your computer and sends it to Google. This includes summary information, such as the number of searches you do and the time it takes for you to see your results, and application reports we'll use to make the program better. You can opt out of sending this information during the installation process or from the application preferences at any time. Personally identifying information, such as your name or address, will not be sent to Google without your explicit permission. (unless you forget to opt-out)

How we use unique application numbers, cookies and related information.

Your copy of Google Desktop Search includes a unique application number. When you install Google Desktop Search, this number and a message indicating whether the installation succeeded is sent back to Google so that we can make the software work better. Additionally, when Google Desktop Search automatically checks to see if a new version is available, the current version number and the unique application number are sent to Google. If you choose to send us non-personal information about your use of Google Desktop Search, the unique application number with this non-personal information also helps us understand how you use Google Desktop Search so that we can make it work better. The unique application number is required for Google Desktop Search to work and cannot be disabled.
