I thought you were going to ask who would win in a war between Costa Rica and Canada.

No need to answer. We know.

Canada has next to no army.

Costa Rica has no army at all.

CR doesn't have an army. So the answer would be CR of course, haha.

Hey WarChild, how much do you think somebody should be making if they wanted to up and move to CR and live nicely. I know this depends on a million things, but what would you personally recommend?

The problem with Costa Rica is there is no real "middle class". There are rich and poor people. If you have white skin and/or seem American/Canadian/European .. You will have to pay more for rental housing, cars and things like that. Unless you can get a local to negioate on your behalf.

You can LIVE in Costa Rica for about $1000 a month. If you want to live fairly comfortable, $3000. If you want to live like a king, $6000. Excluding hookers and drugs of course ;).

If you buy the house you're going to live in, considerably cheaper.

That's exactly what I said!

Where are you in Costa Rica? I used to live in Escazu. My partner is living in Heredia right now. I intend to return fairly quickly and stay permanently this time. Trying to work out residency.

I've been doing a lot of research lately and from what I understand, Escazu is one of the nicer suburbs of San Jose? I was looking at some houses online and really liked what I was seeing.

So $3k monthly income would work great for a single guy who doesn't do a whole lot of partying and crazy activities but does like to live nicely?

I'll try to give you a little more detail.

$400 - rents a house that's a concrete box. 800 square feet max. No hot water, instead you have a "Suicide" shower head. That's an electric heater wired on the end of the water spout of your shower. Scares the shit out of me.

$1000 - will rent you a decent apartment or small house with hot water and maybe appliances. MOST rental properties include no appliances. You will want to buy a fridge, stove and washing machine.

$1500-$3000 will rent you from a nice house with a pool to about diplomatic residence. Pretty fucking nice.

Food at local establishments is pretty cheap. Local meat, fruits, vegetables are cheap. Imported American Beef, chain restaurants (Fridays, Pizza Hut) are more expensive than in Canada/USA. Booze, cigarettes and drugs are pretty cheap.

Utitilies are expensive. Budget to pay a little more than you do now.

New cars are subject to huge import taxes (100%+). Older vehicles, with tax paid, are about normal priced. Maybe a little cheaper.

Personal income tax is very low. Interest rates are very high. The local currency falls constantly to the US dollar.

For a single guy that doesn't party a lot, $3000 will live a very comfortable life. Off the top of my head, that's a bit of a run down for you.

Hola! I live in Moravia. Used to live in Escazu as well, but got too crowded. I really hope your residency works! You know we do love having new people joining us. There are no beaches like here huh?

ADSL is now available. Expect to pay around $100-$200.

The two way cable is slow as shit. ADSL is the best option. It's also available in some of the beach areas now including Jaco and Quepos.

Thanks for the offer! I'll be down in San Jose within the next few months. My Godson, who happens to be a tico, requires my presence there at his baptisim (sp?). Should be interesting as I haven't been to church since I was old enough to think for myself. Ahh well!

Not exactly, WarChild answered it. But thanks for your help.

If everything goes well I'm going to come down in March/April to check it all out for myself.

To tell you the truth, I wouldn't mind some rain, haha. I have always loved a nice warm rain, I haven't experienced one since I moved to San Diego 3 years ago.

Remember the capital city and surrounding region is some 2500 Meters above sea level. The rain in the city is not always "warm". On the beach, you get higher average temperatures. Makes the rainy season warm and the dry season stifling
