England, 21, delivered the baby Sunday evening, a military source told The Sun early today on the condition of anonymity. No other details were available.

Roy T. Hardy, an attorney representing England's family in Fort Ashby, W.Va., said by telephone today, "I really can't discuss that." Hardy said the family might comment later.

England, 21, who was shown in photographs holding a leash tied to the neck of a naked prisoner and pointing at the genitals of another faces a military court martial on January 19 on charges connected to mistreatment of Iraqi detainees and indecent acts with other soldiers.

She was transferred early this year from Iraq to Fort Bragg, N.C., and is expected to stand trial there -- the only case arising from the scandal to go to court inside the United States.

England has been a polarizing figure in the scandal. Widely circulated photos showing her smiling and flashing a thumbs-up sign near naked inmates outraged much of the nation and the world -- but her family, friends and her lawyers have insisted that England was following orders from higher-ranking officers.

At pre-trial proceedings over the summer, testimony from Army investigators and fellow soldiers portrayed England as a willful desk clerk who disobeyed orders and sneaked out at night to visit her wartime boyfriend, Spc. Charles A. Graner, when he was on duty at the prison's cellblock.

Six other members of England's Army Reserve unit, the Cresaptown, Md.-based 372nd Military Police Company, also face criminal charges in connection with the abuse scandal. One soldier has pleaded guilty and been moved to a military prison in the United States. The other soldiers, including Graner, remain in Iraq.
