Any of you use a laptop as your main computer?

I have 2 computers and the take up too much space, so im thinking of selling them and just using a laptop.
A laptop would be great because I can travel and bring it with me.

but do you get tired of using a laptop all the time? The smakk screen, small keyboard, small mouse, etc? or do you get used to it and learn to like it?

My computing needs have become much simpler as the years went on, now all I need is a mail client, firefox, and SSH and I'm set. Plus with all of the remote desktop software and built-in windows support out there you can always remote your box from anywhere, so a laptop is definitely a good way to go. But overall I think they are bit less comfortable than a desktop, you know smaller screen, smaller keyboard, odd placement of keys. Just get both.

Then install a wireless network in your house, then sit around watching TV and working off your laptop, or better yet from bed.

who cares if you do have resource hogging apps on them, they are just as powerful as desktops if you get the right one.

I switched all my desktops to laptops, and my primary laptop is:

3.0Ghz with HT and 800Mhz FSB.
1GB DDR PC3200 RAM
60GB 7200RPM HD
ATI M10 Mobility 128Mb Dedicated VRAM
17" LCD Screen
DVD/CDRW
10/100/1000 On-Board NIC

Here are some things to consider:

1) Video editing (processing) is highly processor intensive. The faster your processor and bus, the faster you will have your finished product. Faster chips are cheaper for your desktop than for a laptop. You can always upgrade your motherboard to handle the next generation of chips. Not so on a laptop.

2) Laptops don't last forever. Ask anybody who's used one extensively. Eventually it will die. When it does (usually right after warranty exprires) many problems will be too expensive to fix. You'll end up buying another laptop.

In the long run, I think you will spend more money and be frustrated with your results. Keep a desktop machine.

I agree with Liquidmoe, with a fast enough laptop, just about anything is doable.

My goal of running an empire from a laptop is getting closer and closer every day.

I love my laptop, not used it much to be honest since I bought it 6 months ago, but I had to come out to The Phillipines and I am using it everyday. I am seriously thinking of just buying another Dell Laptop when I come home to use for everyday. I need bigger spec tho, this one has:

Pentium 4 2.66 Processor
20 gb HDD
15" Display
DVD Rom
CD Rewriter
256MB RAM
Integrated Wireless Internet

Its pretty good for what I use it for.....which is NOTHING until now.

I wanna be working from a laptop from now on tho. I have 2 desktops in my office at home, I'll just one them for storing content when I do buy my new notebook

i use laptop for over one and a half year now as a primary computer. and i love it. and yes, i do graphics on it. and people love those designs.. so i guess - laptops are even good for doing graphic design work nowdays

btw, while at desk, i use microsoft's optical mouse, i don't want to play with those touchpads or whatever.

I sure do.. plug in a monitor, a kb and a mouse and it's like a desktop while at office.. then you can bring it anywhere... it's a p4 2.6 so no speed issue ;)

Well the Dell Inspiron XPS model is like having a desktop and it is meant to be used instead of your desktop. I have two laptops and two desktops. At one time I used only my laptops for everything, you get use to it. The only reason I am back to my desktop system is my wireless network card on the laptop in the bedroom, started to disconnect me for no reason at all.

I have a desktop and notebook. I prefer working on my desktop, mainly because I find the screen is postioned too low on the notebook (hurts my neck), plus the desktop has more grunt and the screen is better.

Is that an Alienware? I have almost the same layout with the nvida 128 fxgo 5600 and I love it. Resource hogs are not a problem at all.

Run photoshop and vmware with freebsd or mandrake at the same time without any issues. It will even run premiere an dcan handle encoding video.

17 inches with 1600*1200 makes for a very nice workspace.

Portability. I've always had a laptop but always bought a bottom of the line one just for travel. Now I can use this and go wherever I want and still have the same power and data.

And traveling isn't the biggest issue, working outside and taking it to friends/family/wireless spots is also VERY handy

The keyboard takes time getting used to. I don't have a docking station but I also don't use numbers very much. I think if I used numbers more I'd get the docking station.

Better depends on your needs. When I go to a show or on a buisness trip it is great i have all my work.

We have a physical office and I also work fomr home allot so again having all my programs settings and emails in one place is great. At home, work or on vacation I can always access the data the same way.

Not to mention even at home if I don't want to sit in my office I can take the laptop outside and work while getting some sun.

If being mobile is an advantage to you there is no reason to stay with a desktop just for performance. Not to mention you can get a docking station real cheap these days and then you have the best of both worlds.

A friend of mine replaces his desktop with an Alienware Area51. 3.2ghz beefed up mofo.

I plan on replacing my desktop by the end of the year with a Dell Inspiron 8600. That's a bad ass computer with the pentium M so it lasts for a long time. And you can game on it if you want to (light gaming).

My only problem is storage. I'm not sure if I should keep a desktop, or just get a USB external hard drive holder and slap in a 250gb drive. This might be the best answer.

For more info about laptops and recommendations you could always check this place out:

Dell often has 20% off coupons too. I just priced an 8600 at $2800 and it came to $2100 after the 20% discount and their other special offers like free shipping. I almost ordered it but decided to wait.

I have the 8600 and love it! I only paid $1500 so you must be beefing it up
