Would you pay $4.95/mo for Napster?

I would.

Napster Tests Service, Considers Pricing

In a sign that Napster is moving closer to relaunching its service, the company's servers were operating for a brief time on Wednesday for testing purposes, Billboard Bulletin reports. Napster plans to debut a fee-based version of its file-swapping technology later this summer.

Meanwhile, new Napster CEO Konrad Hilbers told a member of the German press earlier this week that the company is looking to price its basic subscription offering at about $5 per month. A spokesperson says Hilbers' comment is in keeping with previous estimates that Napster is considering a $4.95 price point for its basic service.

Elsewhere on the Web, music retailers are throwing their support behind the proposed Music Online Competition Act and accusing the major labels of trying to unfairly control the digital distribution market. In an Aug. 8 letter to Recording Industry Association of America president/CEO Hilary Rosen, National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) president Pam Horovitz states, "Music retailers have no choice but to seek legislative remedies when copyright owners refuse to engage in any meaningful discussion with them regarding digital distribution."

The NARM letter came in response to a recent statement by Rosen condemning the bill, charging that it is a "solution in search of a problem" that "substitutes government regulation for the marketplace."

Sign me up, $4.95 for napster is a steal, I have started buying CD's again since Napster died at $15 a pop for one CD. Napster has unlimited songs for $4.95 a month hell ya I'd signup.

I know their are other places to download free music like bearshare.com but napster is the best I'd rather pay them money then use those other places.

all i can say is napster better be hosting the files, cuz i ain't paying them money to have people download mp3s off me. and just as well, i doubt there will be the same volume of available music due to the fact te only people on will be those paying, which will be a much lower # than that of what there was before.

at least thats the way i look at it. i just use audiogalaxy, sure it sucks ass but i still get the songs i want.. or i get them off irc, or ftps

I've never had any trouble finding the tunes I want with Bearshare. Unless it's some 20 year old hair tune that got a weeks worth of airplay when it came out. It's not hard to use, you just fire it up, let it connect to as many hosts as you set it for, do a search, and when something comes back, download it. Piece of gravy. Or is that cake? Hell, gimme a piece of cake with some gravy on it!

More than half of the webmasters here complain about people leeching off of terra.es yet you don't mind 'grabbing' music that artists worked hard on.

gotta love hypocrites.

It's 12$ for a CD, 3$ for a single- big deal. just buy them if you like them.

Fuck BEARSHARE, AUDIOGALAXY, IRC or any of them ... The ONLY software you need is MORPHEUS. It is exactly like Napster (I think they even used Napster's coding) ... but 10x BETTER, as it also allows you to share pictures, videos, and software too !!

You can download MORPHEUS for free at www.musiccity.com

Yup... I am with JakeR... Most of the webmasters here would flame and ban someone who stole content or entire websites (sammyfox is a good example) but are happy to steal music from the authors. That is extremely hypocritcal.

If Napster was $5 a month and it was legal to download the songs off there, then I would certainly pay it - even $15 a month would be a bargain!

I've had WinMX for about two weeks now, and from what I can tell, it does this too. I got it at www.webmasterfree.com, and it works very similar to Napster, except it also does video files, etc. and it remembers your sort options better than Napster did.

As for justifying ripping off the artists by downloading for free, from all I have read about this, the artists aren't the ones who object to Napster, it's the record labels. They're the ones losing any money from file sharing. But if they'd lower prices on CDs and CD singles, they'd have MORE sales.

(just my opinion)

I dont know...have record sales slowed down since Napster has come out?

I know nothing about the music biz but it seems to me that a LOT of records are going multi platnum much faster now than they did before the internet was here

Just be warned that the AudioGalaxy Satellite is spyware. It installs a small program called Webhancer, which tracks where you go on the Net, reads files on your hard drives and sends the info to some company.

dude, that's the whole point with mp3s... researches have shown that the people downloading mp3s are buying MORE CDs than the others, and also that their buying increased with it...

I have discovered TONS of new artist thanks to mp3 sharing, and it resulted in myself buying some of their cds, along with going to their shows... something I wouldn't have done if it wasn't for downloading mp3s in the first place.

btw, I wouldn't pay for the napster shit for one reason.... napster DOES have the best engine... but the problem is that the BIG record companies have sort of divided in 2... which will mean that napster will have ALL the songs of the companies that support it, while all the other songs from the other Music Co. won't be available through it, and will be only accessible through the competition's Software.

There are too many Napster clones and gnutella style programs (imesh, limewire, etc..) to pay for for such a service. But it makes you wonder... we bitch about people using unlicensed adult content but we'll turn around and steal from the recording artists... happy pirating

fuck yeah i would pay 5$ a month for napster... all those gnutella clients do kick ass for shit like porn mpegs and feature films that are not even on dvd or vhs yet but a lot of the connections will take a long time to start or they will disconnect halfway through the download... fuck that ... but napster is only a music database and shit.. there were anywhere around 1,000,000-3,000,000 files to be shared at any given time... then all you have to do is burn the shit on to cd and you dont have to wait for the downloads and if one does not work then you usually have about 50-100 to choose from to get the song that you are looking for. I think i downloaded about 5-6 gigs of songs while napster was up... Man I loved it... I wish we still had it

Well JakeR are you sure you never used cassettes or blank CD-R's?
Where does one draw the line? Ask Korn how much of the $15.00-$20.00
they get per CD.

I know multitudes of end users who have owned machines for years and
a few have asked me to install Napster (when it was free). They never "get it"
how to obtain songs so they never used it.

With Napster dead (not free and filtered) you have to have a bit of "gumption"
to get a new piece of software to continue leeching free tunes. This alone cuts
out ½ of the old Napster users from evolving to new software b/c Morpheus
and the likes are not publicized in the media like Napster continuously was.

I suppose you have never d/l'ed pierat soft or burned a CD, or recorded a cassette,
or recorded a video...jeesus H...holier than thee.

If one knows how to get tunes then go for it and phuk the morality issues and
baggin' on ppl for leeching. I nor 98% of the d/l'ers sell these tunes. It isn't the
copyright the industry is worried about it's the $15.00 they never see.

Ummm who gives Korn the millions UP front to make that CD? Who pays for all the sound gear, technicians, mixers, bimbo's?...

The record companies do. Then they lose if they don't sell XX million copies to cover their outlay.
