The part that kills me is these children are so young. My lord imagine the potentially harmful, infectious, dangerous and toxic stuff that is in this landfill.

They probably don't even have shoes on.

There is no excuse that we can't find solutions for places and people so impoverished.

No excuse at all with all the wealth and technology on this planet.

At that point I doubt you are even cabpable of feeling hunger any longer.

I've posted the stats before, but for anyone who hasn't seen them.

40,000 Children die every single day globally from hunger.

14.6 Million each year.

It is good to have a reality check every once in a while.

I recently watched a documentary that showed the lives of these people.

Children are born on the garbage dump. They live there all their life searching the garbage for scap metal and plastic to sell just so they can buy enough food to live for another day of doing exactly the same thing all day long. They have horrible infections and diseases all their life because of the environment they live in, and eventually they die (on the garbage dump).

Yes it's very sad. My question is what would happen if all these kids somehow lived? That's a lot of extra mouths to feed down the road. They need to go in and castrate the people producing children in these invironments.

The population of India is 1.065 Billion people, and it is growing by 15.33 million people a year. That's about 42,000 people a day.

Amazing

Eventually, unless we pull off some real good technology advances in the production of food and water, the wars of the future are going to be fought over these two resources we can't live without.

There simply won't be enough fish and animals left to eat at a certain breaking point. Not enough vegetation and fruit because there are only so many places that can produce good crops.

India is expected to be at 2 Billion by 2050. Their water tables are dropping 3 meters per year. Eventually you reach a point where there is not enough water for irrigation and drinking water.

And what about waste and trash disposal. Where's it all going?

I don't know how India manages today. I can't understand how it can continue to support as many people as it does. Even though most live in complete poverty, they're still existing somehow. And tomorrow there will be another 42,000, and the next day, and the next day.

if an ice age hits(either from a nuclear winter or some major volcanic eruptions) then food would be at a huge premium.

Hunger is actually generally not a problem of overpopulation, but of poverty.

Surviving insufficient dietary energy intakes requires reducing physical activity, which causes workers in third world countries to be less productive. Many studies have been done proving that supplementary food has a significant positive effect on the productivity of poor workers in developing countries. That's one way hunger has a really big negative effect economic effect.

Another thing hunger does is hinder the development of long term business projects. People who are suffering from hunger simply do not have the opportunity to create the long term projects that are essential to the economy because they are too busy finding something to eat right now.

Yet another negative effect of hunger on the economy is the way it influences the development in children. Undernutrition impairs physical growth and inhibits mental development in children. On the long term, this robs the economy of healthy workers. Ofcourse, children starving to death does that in an even worse way... the UN estimates that the economic loss in labour caused by children starving to death in the third world adds up to about 16 billion a year. For reference, it is estimated that eradicating world hunger by 2030 would cost $6 billion a year, or slightly over 50 cents per month per person in the western world.

The only way to end hunger is to end poverty, and one of the main factors causing poverty is hunger. "Too many mouths to feed" is not the problem.

Most places with massive amounts of people in this condition are areas without good arid land for food and crop production.

You can't grow a garden in a desert. Unless you have some modern technology in place which none of these 3rd world countries gets adequate access to.

Most of the people suffering from hunger do not live in rural areas. The famines you see on the news every once in a while are actually only a really small part of the problem, however horrible they may be. (and even in the rural areas, money is needed for irrigation, to import/stockpile food for periods of drought, or even to create the infrastructure necessary to successfully distribute food)

Now, I'm sure that you are intelligent enough to not actually believe that everybody just "getting a garden" would solve the problem.

This is really just a way of life for these people. I'm sure it bothers them, but what else would they be doing without that "job"?

We all see it as sad, since we're in a better position.

Now, I'm sure that you are intelligent enough to not actually believe that everybody just "getting a garden" would solve the problem.
I didn't say crops, I said a garden. As in, if I were starving to death and eating out of the dumpster I might throw some seeds in some dirt whether it be in a pot or somewhere I have access to. I would pour whatever wet shit on it I could and be eating something besides trash one day. There's much more involved with these people than them not being able to nurse a plant into fruitation. If they were intelligent but just deprived of certain things because of where they are they'd still be intelligent enough not to keep having kids that will starve to death. They live like animals and it needs to be stopped one way or another.

Definitely a very pressing issue, good thread KRL. Despite all the problems they're battling over there, they still manage to smile. Such genuine smiles too.

They can be happy with the little things they got. I remember my old teather travelling to Africa, let some kids have pencils and things like that. They were cheering. Over pencils.

I get mad depressed thinking about what's happening around the globe.

Wrong ...
because we live in a sexual dark ages ...
THEY ARE NOT TAUGHT the Combined Fertility Cylcle method of avoiding pregnancy.

They simply don't know and get pregnant because they believe lies and myths ...

It's our job - the "haves" to ensure a global standard for sex education - to HELP stop poverty.

Are you drunk?
If not, you are quite a bit less intelligent than I thought you were.

Growing your own food requires a significant amount of fertile land, as well as seeds, fertilizer, water and expertise. Money, time and education, three things these people don't have.
In most third world countries, people who have actually spent their entire lives farming are hardly able to live of their own land. With no land of your own and no starting resources, it's an impossible task.

As for children, most people simply don't have the knowledge to even know how to practice birth control. Many others don't have the resources. Also, many traditional/conservative groups are opposed to birth control (e.g. the pope), which also has a large influence.
Besides that, in many third world countries large families are a part of the culture and children are used as a pension plan of sorts. If you get old and don't have children, you'll die the moment you aren't able to take care of yourself anymore.

Very sad indeed, although I still feel that charity begins at home, and before we help other nations we should help our own people.

I was being sarcastic but the fact remains, there is much more in the root of the problem than these poor people that were born into a bad place. They are fucked in the head and do nothing to improve anything. They spend their days scavaging and popping out kids that are doomed from the start.
