According to what I read at news.com gateway is consdiring closing it down. Here is the quote from the page.

"Gateway notified employees Wednesday that it is considering closing its manufacturing plant in Dublin as well as its sales, service and marketing operations throughout Britain and Ireland. Under British and Irish law, companies are required to consult with employee-elected representatives before making such a move, a process that could take 30 to 90 days. "

Gateway? Balljoints is Laughing REALLY HARD now.

Paid $2,200 for a 700mhz amd April of 2000.

Just got it back from the "shop" for the 4th time in 5 months, and have had in that time, the cpu, harddrive and motherboard replaced 2x. Had the Ram replaced 3x. Had the keyboard replaced 4x.

Still have problems with it. Their "techs" dont have a clue what is going on...

I am not surprised that they would shut down operations. Either they are dealing with companies that are sending them bad product, or the people they employ are screwing up the product because they are clueless.

Not sure which..

They could be doing what HP and PB did a few years ago and buying cards from companies that manufacturer new equipment from scavenged parts on unsold cards etc. lol Someone should have taught them how to use heat sinks when desoldering or just bought better stuff.

Yep, way back in the heyday, before anyone heard of Dell, Gateway was the techie's dream machine. They had competent people, 1st quality components and a very low failure rate of delivered machines. If something did fail, no problem cause they sent a replacement overnight and then you sent the defect back to them etc.

Now, I wouldn't touch those fuckers with Boneprone's dick Seriously, if you need a reliable business class desktop then you need to be buying Dell. I buy maybe 10 of them a month and I'm happy. Just bought two new Dell servers last month and they simply rock.

For home use, I'm a build-it-yourself guy though.

Bought my DELL in April 2000, and it rocks.
In march/april 2001 bought one to my girlfriend.

They do have a factory in Brazil, but since most of the components are from US or other countries, they have to pay import taxes of 60%. It sucks.

So I pay like $2500 for a computer you guys pay about $1300.

Damn, who would buy an assembled system from a company anyways ?

It's all about selfmade - everything runs fine and it's plenty faster than any system you can get from Dell, Gateway and others...
PLus you might even get it for the same price, if not cheaper !

i was gonna buy some dell systems last month but i couldn't justify it so i bought a LCD panel instead

Stories like these are the very reason why I had my new PC custom-built !!!

If you can find a REPUTABLE dealer (or a Network Admin type of person), who you can trust ... you stand to save about 40% of the "RETAIL" cost ... and you will be MUCH happier with a PC built exactly to the specs you want/need !!

I just built my DREAM MACHINE :
-Asus AX4-A Motherboard
-P3 933 Ghz processor
-512 MB PC133 bus SDRAM
-Western Digital ATA-100 Ultradrive 40gig hard drive (7200RPM)
-Pioneer DVD ROM
-Hitachi CD-RW
-Ge Force 32 MB video card
-Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Dolby Digital sound
*And topped off by a 19"Samsung 'Perfectly Flat' SVGA Monitor !!!

I paid just over $1900 Canadian for this ...
and FUTURESHOP wanted $2399 for a HP P3 866 with INTERGRATED sound and video ... and only 128 RAM ... 5400RPM hard drive ...
and 17" HP Monitor (not flat)

BTW ... I have not had 1 problem with my DREAM MACHINE runs better than perfect !!!

your samsung can't be a flat panel for that much, the 15"'s go roughly for 599 to 699 CDN alone unless you meant a 19" CRT monitor with the flat display shizbang

all my computers i got currently are built by myself mostly from known parts i use to install for a shop i use to work for. ya gotta be carefull with certain combos of hardware damn mickeysoft doesn't always wanna work "properly" (god thats funny)

three things tho, a) don't buy hp computers b) don't buy a computer from futureshop c) samsumg monitors kickass

.. this is where i typed a whole shit of stuff.. almost my life story i just deleted it after i read it. why oh why did i do that.
