It helps raise the number of backlinks to your site. The more backlinks you have, the more PR you get. It also matters what the PR of each backlink is, as well.

I think the ratings have went down for blogs, i think google has caught on that people aren't using them for blogging anymore but for porn and other stuff.

You can turbo charge the number of blogs linking back to you by running a referrer marketing script. It also brings in direct traffic when the blog owners have a referrer display on their sites. Their users see you in the referrer record and click on over to your site.

The green toolbar thing is worthless, any site that links to you helps with link popularity it helps more if the content is similar
