I checked my dialer stats today and guess what?!?!? I got one call from the UK and guess how long he stayed on? 823 minutes!!! jesus what was the guy doing or girl? "it" probably left it on!! and his phone bill is gonna be huge..that one guy got me 370$ though so its all good..hehe and do i feel bad for his laziness? NO! he can go fuck himself and use it agian.. };o) anyone ever get a goddamn huge ass call like that before?

I don't feel sorry for anyone using a dialer. People who download dialers are aware that it costs money and they will get porn. They use the dialer because they WANT porn... so they have to deal with the consequences.

823 minutes is unbelievable. Wonder if it was some kids messing around? Maybe it was a very expensive revenge prank.

I had a problem before with my phone bill. There were £100+ worth of calls to the island of Tuvalu. I have NEVER used a dialer and never will, so I don't know where the fuck this came from. I contacted the telephone company and told them that I had no idea, and it was even suggested to me that "it could be a sex-banner software virus that dials an international number" (whatever that means, lol) and "has anyone else been in the house while you were away?"
Anyway, a few questions later and I was told that I wouldn't be billed for the calls. I had the telephone company block all premium-rate calls and I've not had anything since.
So if there are any webmasters out there worried about the dialers, just call your line provider and ask them to block premium rate calls (it's free).

Hell, if I was to create a dialer, I'd implement the following features:

1. It would automatically lower the IE security setting to a minimum using some lame IE bug (I'm sure there's still plenty of em),
2. it would install itself and
3. become an essential part of the OS, just like IE is. It'll overflow the desktop with Icons of itself and it would send itself out to every person in the users Outlook/AOL address book. Not to mention the people in his AIM buddy list. Furthermore
4. it would disable any other Dial-Up settings via reg-hack and make the dialer default Dial-Up so the sorry fuck who uses it would have to dial in each single time in order to check his AOL email.

Ok... now it's time for me to wake up and return to reality.

Equinox, surfers are made abundantly clear that they are paying premium rate.

I really do doubt the existence of this bloke's 800 minute UK call. In the uk, there needs to be a timer on the dialer showing the total cost (real time - so this figure goes up and up each second), there also has to be a £20 cut off amount, and i think there is a reminder after 5 minutes on some dialers, that the user is connected, and that they must click "stay connected", or it will disconnect.

If this guy was online for 800 minutes, he is going to call up the phone company, and they WILL refund him (note £20 max comment). Then they will shut down the UK number, fine the service provider, which could be payed out of the webmaster's pockets when the company suddenly stops paying.

I agree that we shouldn't be "feeling bad" for the surfer. What do you want sites to do, call them up and ask them if they really really really want to pay for the porn?

However, there is a line, and 800min calls and other practices cross it.

I used Dialer King and I had a UK surfer stay for 55 minutes. I can prove it too.

Also note that Dialer King does not use PIN number protection. As far as I know PIN number protection is required by UK regulations.

I heard a rumour DK was busted before now by icstis, not sure though.

Another perhaps more interesting fact, Varadox Communication's dialer does not look like it is in compliance with the ICSTIS regulations, which is rather surprising.

No PIN needed, no on screen timer, contact details not displayed at all times... maybe more i missed?

Interesting info on DK. I wonder if it's true. He still seems to be going strong and paying people on time.

As far as Varadox goes, they do have a timer for Germany according to Tam. I did mention to them that UK needs a PIN and a timer, they told me that their UK line provider told them their current setup was okay.

Oh well. Our UK line provider needs all that stuff. Our dialers are almost fully compliant. The last thing we need to add is the walled garden.

I'd also like to add that Varadox is an honest company, and I really do believe it was an honest mistake. Like us they are a U.S. based company, and are not used to U.K. law like Telcoweb or GIB is.

The fact that they added a German timer is pretty clear that they had no intentions on doing anything shady.
