there's an outside chance if vioxx is withdrawn, then scrutiny will go hard on celebrex, and it might also have to be withdrawn.

A connection I have with merck just told me that entire departments and ventures are closing and on hold..

This is bad.. Training for a particualr position he was moving into is on hold and perhaps canceled altogether.. He's one of thier top guys in this particualr field which is pretty specfic in nature and according to him, not only is wall street in a panic, the company itself and all its managers and big boys are equally in a panic.

Soo much has already been canceled and put on hold..

This is all happening so fast its amazing.

Waking up in the morning loosing a 3 billion dollar a year product will do it I guess.

Difficult to tell.

Drugs are pulled all the time, not to offten to they take out all meds int he same catagory. These drugs may be in the same catagory but that doesnt mean all drugs in the catagory are having the same effects.

Pretty slim chance..

FDA didnt pull the Vioxx, Merck pulled it.

Celebrex isnt about to pull thier product now.

Also the FDA has been warning Merck and the public for a while now of its ties to heart attacks. Something that hasnt been mentioned by the FDA with Celebrex..

There was bad news in the pipeline for Vioxx for a while now. They must have seen the FDA coming and took it off before the FDA would. The warnings have been there.

You're exactly right in that Merck pulled it to avoid an FDA-enforced recall.

What you may not know, however, is that Merck is busy as hell working to get FDA approval for their new drug, Arcoxia, which will either be their saving grace or their last ditch effort. I am working on an ad campaign for the drug as we speak, and it looks to me like they are doing it right ... putting it in front of as many doctors as is financially / techologically possible.

The other plus they have on their side is that we started working on this campaign (I play a very small third party roll, of course) over a month ago.

We had been planning for several months to do a project involving Vioxx, and everything was on schedule until a month ago when they called us and said "Sorry, change of plans, we have no room in our budget for ANY of the projects we've been discussing which involve Vioxx". At the time it made no sense and we were blown away ... this morning it all came clear.

Please don't quote me on any of this.

I'll deny it.

Look for Arcoxia in the news tomorrow AM.

The reason i think the problem would potentially affect celebrex and any new anti-COX 2 inhibitors is because is exactly because of it's mechanism

COX-2 inhibitors like celebrex, and vioxx inhibit a specific enzyme cyclooxygenase but they inhibit a specific form of it, the result is LESS chance of gastrointestinal bleeding, so it's safer for something like arthritis.

Good old fashion aspirin inhibits cyclooxygenase too, but it's not specific, as a result there are bleeding risks, a lot of people get bleeding ulcers and a lot of people do die from it..

HOWEVER this thinning of the blood prevents clots from forming and decreases the rate of heart attacks. It's huge, and millions of people are on aspirin exactly for this fact.

The reason people in these trials had an increased risk of heart attacks is because they weren't getting the blood thinning effect.

Anyway you cut it, I'm fairly sure cox-2 inhibitors in older age groups (those most likely with arthritis) is doomed.
