porn facts

Did you know ... ?
The word "pornography" comes from the ancient Greek porne and graphos, meaning "writing about prostitutes".

Marilyn Monroe was the first Playboy centerfold.

Pornography was first legally outlawed in Victorian times, though an underground porn 'scene' flourished.

Canada hosts much of the child porn available on the Internet.

Penthouse was the first American magazine to fully reveal female genitalia. Playboy followed suit in 1977. Readers objected in hoards, so Playboy acquiesced to maintain its "soft-core" image.

By showing pubic hair and couples, Penthouse circulation shot to a high of 4.7 million in 1979.

Hugh Hefner, creator of Playboy magazine has an extensive collection of hardcore and bestiality porn.

During the late '80's, magazines like Cheri, Hustler and High Society began showing erect penises, ejaculation, and hints of penetration.

Although magazines got much more explicit in the '90's the market has shifted to videos.

Playboy was the sex magazine with the highest circulation (3.3 million) in 1997.

For the nine months ending on 9/30/98, the revenues of Playboy Enterprises increased 3% to $225.2 million.

More than 25,000 retail outlets in the U.S.A. carry adult movies.

Adult video rentals and sales make up 13% of the entire video market, for a volume of $3.1 billion.

Nationally, in stores that carry both general release and adult video, the adult portion of sales and rentals was 28.1% in 1995. Many video retailers depend upon adult products to stay in business.

In 1995, in the U.S.A., stores reported a total of 609 million rentals of adult tapes. 920,000,000 of these were rented in California. If each rental were for one day, at least $22 million of sales tax would have been generated for the state.

According to Adult Video News, approximately 8,000 new adult video titles were released in 1996 in the U.S.A.
