yeah that's your dumbass rock stupid conservative policy at work, putting non-violent and drug offenders in with hardcore violent criminals to 'punish' them.

the same fucking mindset that leads to a ban on cigarette smoking.

This is nothing new, Smoking was already banned inside of California State Prisons years ago. The only place inmates could smoke was out in the yard, all this does is stop that too

Prison is punishment. It's not supposed to be fun or comfortable. They need to have nutritious but bland food, nothing but milk & water, NO T.V., no smokes, no candy, no personal property with the exception of personal hygiene items. Most prisons right now are more like dorms and don't really serve as an effective punishment or deterrent.

When you become a prisoner, your freedoms should be gone. You should not be able to dictate how you will behave. Violence from the inmates should be met with more violence by the guards and loss of even more freedoms instead of increasing the prisoners rights and privileges.

yeah we should be much more like China, Russia and Zaire. Once someone commits a crime they're no longer human, after all, and we can do whatever we want with them. Maybe we should sterilize them and use them as guinea pigs for our medical research.

A lot of this type of mixing is due to lack of space. The prisons are bursting.

Thats why when I see all the panic about going to jail over a 2257 regulation error it makes me wonder where the fuck they would put all these people.

Bill sponsor Tim Leslie, a Republican assemblyman, estimates that about half of California prisoners smoke, costing $280 million in related health care costs.
How is that a bad move on his part? He looses 1.3 million in sales taxes, but gains back a huge portian of the 280 million they are spending on tobacco related illnesses in prison.

Seems like a bright move to me. The prisoners might not like it, but fuck it, but shit... they are in prison.

yeah I'm for real. It's VERY EASY to get thrown in prison these days, and once you're in the system they never let you go. Any little thing you do is a parole violation and you're right back inside. The guards are just as criminal as the convicts. Parole boards are politically appointed and only grant parole when they need to clean out the prisons. The Penal system is the most corrupt venal institution in the US today.

Did you know we have more people locked up as a % of the population than just about any country in the world? Did you know that our prisons are already just about the worst in the world? No of course you didn't, because you get all your info from Fox News and you've never heard of Eldridge Cleaver.

You shits want to turn us into Bulgaria, and this country should be better than that.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites), who set up a tent outside his smoke-free state office to accommodate his taste for a good cigar, signed a bill barring tobacco from state prisons.

The measure, signed Monday, amends the state's penal code to bar tobacco products from prisons and youth correctional facilities. Violators are subject to a fine.

Supporters say the changes will help save the state money on health care and improve the health of 160,000 state inmates. Some parts California's criminal justice system such as county jails have already banned smoking.

The state generated about $1 million in tobacco taxes and $370,000 in sales taxes by selling tobacco products to inmates last year.

yeah the prisons are bursting because stupid fuck conservatives won't vote for any politician who's not willing to give the death penalty for jaywalking, and ever since Willie Horton NOBODY gets paroled until their sentence is about up anyway.

Putting everybody in prison has never, in the entire recorded history of civilization, solved any social problem. It just allows manipulative politicians to convince stupider voters that they're anti-crime and they're doing something about it.
