I had a wee bit of a conversation with myself a moment ago. Went like this:

Yep. It's fall. Time for allergy season part deux.

what is it like having allergies

jacobt: It sucks. Allergies are your body's reactions to things that it believes to be a threat that are not normally considered to be so. Example: Many people are allergic to pollen, though it isn't at all dangerous, (usually), to the human body. Thus, we sneeze our heads off in early spring and early fall. The sneezing is the body's way of "getting rid of" the allergen.

Sometimes, allergies can be quite severe. For example, there are people who are allergic to penicillin or penicillin derivitives. Most of the people who are allergic to those have what are called "anyphalactic reactions." The body reacts violently against the allergen in question, and the most severe of those reactions is called "anyphalactic shock," which causes the throat to swell closed in a mad attempt to prevent more from entering your system. However, that also prevents oxygen from entering your system because of the immediate swelling which closes off your windpipe!

I have that sort of reaction to penicillin and bee/wasp stings. I have to carry a nasty looking device called an "Epi-pen" which is a tube with a pressure-activated needle in it. When thrust against the thigh in a moment of necessity, it releases a dose of epinephrine, which causes the body's immediate response to stop or to slow. Each pen has .3 mg of epinephrine, which gives ample time for the victim to be transported to a nearby hospital, and in some cases, reverses the shock pattern completely.

You make sure you get some VitaminC in there with all the meds....Seasonal allergies suck, but try not to get hooked on the allergy meds. You just end up developing a dependence on most of them.
