Athlon heat question

i purchased yesterday a new pc with the following configuration:Athlon 1333Mhz,384Ram, Geforce2MX and 30gb HD. I faced problem with the cooler of the CPU, probably it had a problem and couldn't work in the speed that it should. I put an extra cooler,much bigger than the normal and the temperature now varies from 44-55 celcius. Do you consider these normal degrees? I searched on the web and the only think I found is that Athlon 1333 can handle up to 92celcius and probably it will be destroyed beyond that point. Do I have to worry that my CPU temperature reaches up to 55 celcius in some situations (games)?
I havent paid any attention on the heating problem of the processors for a long time and i don't know a shit. I see people using some huge cooler systems,larger than my refrigerator.....

45-55c should be ok, but i wouldnt want to go anywhee near 92.

try www.ninjamicros.com they have oc info with lots of stuff on cooling, good people on the boards also.

That's why we don't see AMD in web servers, they can't take the heat.

If you don't like the noise of these huge air coolers, you could look for water cooling systems. The best would be to build one your own.

AVS that converts AND sends traffic. Be a good guy and use my link: ProAdult

Anyways, TBirds can easily handle temps around 55 deg. C, but it should usually be a lot lower, even under full load. For example my PIIIs, that are even o/c'ed by 233Mhz each run at 35 deg. under full load (SETI@Home, 5 Q3 sessions with full detail and Folding@Home simultanously) ; usually TBirds aren't a whole lot hotter than that. to see a good write-up on heatsinks. I am sure you can find a good one there (The DragonOrb kicks ass). Make also sure you have a good thermal paste on the die to help the heat transfer. If you want, hit me up on ICQ and I'll talk to you for hours about that shit

New architecture (palomino), less heat - perfect for servers. You'll see AMD getting in the server biz soon enough.

I have an Athlon and it is also on the HOT side. So I bought four case fans (cost $25US). Now my problem is solved

I've got an Athlon 1.33 that runs right around 125 deg F day in and day out.

I've got a cooler on the chip, plus 3 fans
in the case. No matter what I'm doing. i.e., Photoshop renderings etc. it never varies from that temperature.

I don't think your temperature is too high. It's probably near the upper edge of what I'd call the "comfort level" but nothing
to be concerned with. If you haven't already done so, add another fan or two to the case and you should be fine for a good long time.

I got AMD T-Bird 1.333, 256mb ram, geforce2 MX, 40 gb HD, 300 watt power supply.

My chip runs around 55 degrees celcius all the time, sometimes just a bit higher. I have never had a heat related lockup yet, and everything seems to be running smooth after about 4 months or so that i've had it.

It cant hurt to get another fan in there, it will only make things better, but i dont think you have to worry about the thing burning up.

this is a KISS method - take the side covers off your tower - my AMD dropped 7C (i got a dvd and a rewriter and 2 hdd's in there)

Actually we are putting those same Athlons in alot of the servers we're building now for our hosting business -- mostly dual configs too --

I asked our hardware guys about the temp issue and there's nothing wrong with the 50-60 degree range Celsius, that seems to be about the average they are seeing on boxes we've got running in regular rooms (not cooled datacenter space) --

thanks a lot, all of you for your help. I visited the sites you refered and got some good info about the subject. Some hours ago i added a 2nd cooler and now the temp is much lower. I'm thinking to build my own water cooling system,it doesnt look that hard and probably would have fun. The noise of the air coolers it's not the most interesting sound you can have AMD really rocks, amazing power in a great price. For sure they'll take a huge % on a server market through time with their new upcoming models. Kimmykim, you did the right thing. Intel Xeon is so fucking expensive that i dont think it worths the $$ If you have solve the heat and the stability(if there's any) issues then you have the perfect server.

We've got some really good hardware guys on the Cavecreek side of the business -- they can make a box sing if you ask them too -- and given the companies that we are hosting these days, we always try to squeeze every last drop out of every box we build -- we've tested several dual motherboards, not sure which one we settled on, but things seem to be going quite well

I run the 1.2 GHZ, Athlon and was having immense problems with it when it was running around 120 degrees, I've got a monster fan on that bad boy now and it stays right around 95 degrees with 2 case fans also to help keep the air clean in the box. You may also want to look at your Harddrive setup, I run IDE Raid and noticed that was causing quite a bit of heat too with the two IBM drives in there.
