				Florida:Woman killed by alligator

A 20-year-old woman died after an alligator bit off her arm as she apparently went out for a late-night swim in a lake near her grandparents' house in Florida, US authorities said.

The body of Michelle Reeves was found by her father in a lake near a residential area yesterday, sheriff's spokeswoman Ileana LiMarzi said. Ms Reeves and her father had come from Georgia to visit her grandparents, she said. Ms Reeves' right arm was bitten off at the elbow and she had puncture wounds on her left arm and upper body, Ms LiMarzi said. She had last been seen around 2.30am yesterday (local time). Ms Reeves' father began searching for her around 10am (local time) and found his daughter's nightgown near the lake. He then called sheriff's deputies, and he found the body after they arrived. The victim had "made several remarks to her family during the day that she wanted to go swimming in that lake," Ms LiMarzi said. State wildlife officials said an alligator was removed from the area. |

now that was just plain fucking stupid... with all the hurricanes and flooding ,the critters have been coming out of nowhere.

I wouldnt even get in the river or lakes in Florida in the damn daytime , let alone in the middle of the night when the gators feed. Why would they remove the gator.. it was just acting on instinct. |

If a crocodile (cos we don't have alligators here) in Australia kills somebody - they kill it! Stuff removing it from the area - they just kill it! |

Sorry if you people think I am insensitive to this girl... but her own stupidity got her killed. The gator lives in the lake..people dont live in the lake.. they only use it for their own recreational purposes. The gator has more right to stay in his home than that girl did to go swimming in the middle of the night.

The gator was hungry.. he found his prey and he ate. its called survival. Pisses me off everytime I see an animal removed from its home because some asshole has to build his house on their land or near it...if you cant learn to live in harmony with the critters, then dont fucking move there. |

I dont blame the gator - but if there is a human poulation nearb y, it is just safer to move the gator to a less populated area. It beats putting the animal down. |

It's ok 2 do it somewhere else but definitely not in the lake in Florida. That was stupid! [/QUOTE Yep, seems to be the majority opinion. Still sad, horrible for her family, but that was an act of Darwinism. |

Usually gators are removed from small lakes they somehow got into that aren't neccesarily their habitat. They'll come up through a drainage tunnel and get into a retention pond, for example. They need to be put back where they're supposed to be, where they can find food and stuff.

If a gator ends up in a pond or lake in a residential area, chances are it won't be able to find enough food there and might start going after neighborhood dogs and such. I have a friend who's family business is to grab gators when they get into a residential area and take them back out to the swamps. Gators end up in all sorts of places they shouldn't be, people's pools, the gutters in front of their houses, etc. |
