It's Seattles Turn > Mount St. Helens is about to Blow

    Ouch.

St. Helens Activity May Signal Explosion

SEATTLE - A strengthening series of earthquakes at Mount St. Helens prompted seismologists Sunday to warn that the once-devastating volcano may see a small explosion soon.

The U.S. Geological Survey (news - web sites) issued a notice of volcanic unrest in response to the swarm of hundreds of earthquakes that began Thursday.

"The key issue is a small explosion without warning. That would be the major event that we're worried about right now," said Willie Scott, a geologist with the USGS (news - web sites) office in Vancouver.

The quakes were tiny at first, but on Saturday and Sunday there were more than 10 temblors of magnitude 2.0 to 2.8, the most in a 24-hour period since the last dome-building eruption in October 1986, Scott said.

In the event of an explosion, Scott said the concern would be focused on the area within the crater and the flanks of the volcano. It's possible that a five-mile area primarily north of the volcano could receive flows of mud and rock debris.

That portion of the mountain blew out during the 1980 eruption that left 57 people dead, devastating hundreds of square miles around the peak and spewing ash over much of the Northwest.

The quakes have occurred at depths less than one mile below the lava dome within the mountain's crater. Some of the earthquakes suggest the involvement of pressurized fluids, such as water or steam, and perhaps magma.

The cause and outcome of the swarm were uncertain Sunday evening. A group of scientists planned to visit the mountain Monday to collect data.

"There's been no explosions, there's no outward sign that anything is occurring. (The notice) is all based on the pattern of earthquake activity that is occurring below the dome," said Scott.

Experts believe there is "an increased probability of explosions from the lava dome if the level of current unrest continues or escalates," USGS and the University of Washington Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network in Seattle said in a joint statement.

Dammit, I wanted to climb it this summer too... not anymore.. My luck, I will be at the top when it decides to go.

I keep a close eye on Ranier..its not too far away and its been burping and farting for awhile and is well overdue...I just hope its not while I am on it.

I had a frightening dream about 6 months ago that the biggest mountain explosion ever happened and Seattle was completely destroyed. And it was Mt. Ranier.

I'm on the east side of Ranier, I hang out alot up there...they have several areas, that they clearly tell you, that are highly volatile and to be prepared for "geological hazards"..such as mud slides , rock slides and possible volcano eruption. Its far enough away from Seattle that I don't think it would take it out.. but the aftermath of earthquakes and tsunamis would reak some havoc. I am scheduled to do the wonderland trail next summer.. 92 miles around the edge of Ranier..lets hope if it happens, I am not there.

Ranier claimed some lives this year.. 4 climbers died..but not certain..might have been 5.

you are referring to the distance from Ranier to Seattle?

road miles its actually about 100 to 125 miles.. now just a straight shot..probably about 75 miles...give or take a few miles.

takes me 3 hours to drive from Ranier to Seattle..no hauling ass around those hairpin curves.

I think Seattle's biggest worry with Ranier going off would be the potential earthquakes it could trigger. Wind direction carrying ash would be another.

When St. Helens blew, Seattle got hardly any ash but cites east and west got covered. I remember HUGE ash piles in Centralia. I can only imagine what Seattle might see if Ranier blew it's stack.

here is something else to worry about

It is little known that lying underneath one of The United States largest and most picturesque National Parks - Yellowstone Park - is one of the largest "super volcanoes" in the world.

The term "supervolcano" has no specifically defined scientific meaning. It was used by the producers of The BBC TV show Horizion in 2000 to refer to volcanoes that have generated Earth's largest volcanic eruptions. As such, a supervolcano would be one that has produced an exceedingly large, catastrophic explosive eruption and a giant caldera.

Scientists have revealed that Yellowstone Park has been on a regular eruption cycle of 600,000 years. The last eruption was 640,000 years ago?so the next is overdue. The next eruption could be 2,500 times the size of the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption. Volcanologists have been tracking the movement of magma under the park and have calculated that in parts of Yellowstone the ground has risen over seventy centimeters this century.

Around the world there are several other volcanic areas that can be considered "supervolcanoes"- Long Valley in eastern California, Toba in Indonesia, and Taupo in New Zealand. Other "supervolcanoes" would likely include the large caldera volcanoes of Japan, Indonesia, Alaska (e.g. Aniakchak, Emmons, Fisher).

Hey I just tried to view the Mount St Helens webcam.

Maybe the last cam got busted by the lava/quakes and the new one is still on its way

In 1980 when St Helens blew, I was in college at WSU in Eastern Washington. It's about a 4 hour drive from St Helens. I was at work that morning and all the sudden it looked like twilight, but it was 10 or 11 in the morning. We had heard the volcano had blown (before CNN existed) on local TV and radio. I drove my car home from work in falling ash that was so thick I could hardly see. The dash from my car to my apartment had me covered in this fine gritty ash. I think I showered 3 or 4 times a day for the next 2 weeks. You always felt grimey from the ash.

As far as Mt Rainier goes... my dad worked for the local county emergency services before he retired. One of his jobs was to coordinate disaster plans for all possible scenerios of Rainier blowing. For Western Washington, most scenerios were more about the resulting flooding and rush of melted snowpack into the existing rivers. The predictions have shown that flooding would effect a large portion of the lowlands and river valleys near Olympia, Tacoma, and east of Seattle. They have what's called Lahar drills here ever so often. Lahar is an debris flow from volcanic activity.

I dealt with St.Helens and two other eruptions in Alaska, 600 miles or so away is best, but somethings can't be avoided. Also, there has been tremors in Alaska since the begining of time, tiny quakes everyday at all hours. I Now live in North Carolina in Hurricane Alley, and they are a bit bother mostly for flood & tornado reasons. There is no safe place to live on this earth, however remember the story of the three little pigs. And just prepare yourself for outages at all times.

Don't worry Raven, you're house, like mine, is not in the valley so flooding isn't going to be a problem. Percussion and flying debris from the initial blast might be a minor consideration but I expect the biggest problem we'll face is ash.
