State taxes can be pretty substantial...in New York it's $1.50 a pack, whereas in tobacco-growing states it's usually only a few cents per pack.

just drove thru kentucky over the weekend (saw a bunch of tobacco farms there) . . . ads showing cartons for UNDER $20 were common at gas stations.

The price all depends on state taxes. If you are an alcoholic or chimney chain smokin fool you should live in Kentucky I guess.
