i just saw a report that the wind was so strong that it pulled the telephone poles out of the ground? not breaking them off but actually pulling them up and out.

You need a battery backup. I got a couple at Sam's club, they have piles of them since the hurricanes have been coming through. Really saved my ass during all the brown outs today.
