CODE RED.

Today at 5:00 PM PST / 8:00 pm EST
many of us may be having very serious problems. The worm is going to be launced again to search for holes, and many sites will be hacked, and the internet as a whole is feared to be slowed down..

This is going to be a major problem, and all over the news today, so keep informed, and be prepared. Shit will be hitting the fan at 5:00 pm PST TODAY.

nothing like this has ever hit the internet before, so it will be intresting to see how many of us are affected today. Tonight may not be the best night to take off for dinner and a movie.

If you are one of the people who have downloaded this worm from this mass emailing over the past week, it will trigger into servers and will serch out holes to infect..

Our main concern is with our webhosting companies..

Many people still dont know they even have the worm.. Better find out before 5:00.

We're curious how many idiot MS server techs ahven't been doing their jobs. Let alone keeping the times set right on their servers they get paid to operate. This might finally convince hosters to do away with alot more MS boxes. Our local mainstream hosts dumped most of theirs two years ago due to this ongoing problem.

Gates should be held more accountable. If we sold a car knowing the brakes were going to fail if strained, we'd be arrested and jailed. You sell an op sys thats open to theft of your business records and then lose your livlihood? Nothing happens to the maker.

MISINFORMATION:

For fucks sake, Boneprone, get your shit right before adding to the media induced frenzy about these worms and viruses.

There have been two separate and distinct worms reported and active in the past two weeks.

1) Code Red. This is a WORM that affects webservers running Microsoft's IIS v 4.0 or 5.0. If you're not running Windows NT or 2000 Server on your desktop, you have (likely) nothing to fear. If you installed IIS 5.0 as part of a Windows 2000 Professional desktop installation, get the patch from Microsoft and run it.

Since the majority of us don't host our businesses on NT/IIS, this will not affect our websites at all, aside from a possible clogging of networks due to excess scanning traffic by worm infected computers.

2) The Win32.sircam virus. This is the email
virus that's been clogging our inboxes for the past 2 weeks. It's completely unrelated to the worm mentioned above. This WILL affect Windows desktop machines running any version of a Microsoft email client (Outlook, Outlook Express). Outlook can be fixed by running the Outlook security patch available from Microsoft. Any decent anti-virus program (I recommend Norton AV) will detect this worm and kill it, provided you have a virus definitions update file that is recent, meaning after 7/18/2001 when the major vendors added support for this bug.

OK, I feel better now.

My nuts hardly itch at all.

Wanna protect computers? Set it's clock to 6pm My thinking (and no I'm not a computer genius) is that if you bypass the one mechinism that triggers the effect, this could help.

I guess that would be too easy...maybe it's not the fix. No need to flame...just my 2¢

the net will still be slowed down im sure. Watch for lots of drops in traffic and $$ for the next few days.

Consumer confidence is going to be challenged. The way the news is pushing this code red is no doubt going to affect sales.

In additon, the press is also educating the cunsumer about exe files and never to download them. Another factor working against the dialer that many dialer peddlers dont need.

This will have an impact on us all even if our systems dont shut down.. From a consumer
Confidence perspective which is much more significant than many of you realize.

That's a crock. The media has been telling people for years not to download anything you don't know about, don't open attachements etc. Don't you remember the Melissa virus and the Lovebug viruses of a year ago? Same story...the internet will come to a screeching halt, don't download or you'll end up with a melted heap of slag on your desktop etc. etc.

This does less to hurt consumer confidence than force-feeding dialer .exe downloads down someone's throat and them waking up with a $9,000 porno phonebill. Never mind the endless pop-up hells, auto-bookmarks etc. That hurts consumer confidence, my friend.

not here to argue and go into a brain storm of everything that hurts consumer confedence.

We could all sit here and write an endless list of things that we think hurt our industry. That is not the issue.

The issue is the media spin and the efffects it will have on short term sales. This will have an affect. Bet on it. If you have any money left to bet with.

Other than that network slowdown is the only thing we have to monitor and see if it does anything to us.
