Any server is a potential target for hackers. An admin who knows what they're doing can do a pretty good job of hardening a box in half a day (eg turn unused services off, fine tune configs, install/configure firewall). Then it's basically just a matter of installing software updates as soon as they become available and ensuring that you use strong passwords. Also turn FTP off and use SSH for all server admin and content uploads.
