Dom Buyer or Taboo....

Was gonna post this in the domains thread, but thought it would get lost.

I was wondering what you guys do for domain security to stop people stealing your domains? Is there a service/registrar/method you use to prevent the theft of your domains?

thanks

iafa

Domains only get stolen if you're to stupid to use registrar lock or if your registrar transfers to everybody who writes them a mail.

Monte (owner of Moniker) is the best.

Lock your domains, esp since the new rules imposed by ICANN in regard to Xfers.

1) Use a reputable registrar.
2) Always lock you domains.
3) Use a strong password on your account.

New procedures have made it much easier to steal domains.

Then the registrar was weak.

Those are the possibilities:

-Registrar account hacked
-Registrar transfered the domain to somebody else without checking (with fraudulent papers etc.)
-Forgot to put on registrar lock
-No auto renew and domain expired without notice

Use a good registrar and none of this will happen.

In think when a name is locked with Dotster or Name Cheap...they would have to hack both your registrar and email acount to steal the domain.

Well said. constantly monitor your portfolio for changes and change your password often. also, as mentioned earlier, the new transfer policy is going to cause so many problems that it should make everyone afraid.

Dear Valued Network Solutions Customer:

ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has changed the domain name transfer policy for all accredited domain name service providers. We are concerned that this policy change puts your domain name at greater risk for being "slammed" (fraudulently transferred). The prior policy allowed you to expressly approve a transfer request with your current domain name service provider before any transfer would occur. The new policy, however, eliminates this express approval safeguard, removing an additional protection against unauthorized transfer requests.

To further enhance the security of the domain names you have registered with Network Solutions and to protect you against unauthorized or fraudulent transfers, we will activate our free Domain Protect service for all of your domain names beginning October 18, 2004.

Our Domain Protect feature blocks domain name transfers until you, or your designated contact, turn the feature "Off." This step allows you to control the "transferability" of your domain names, and provides protection against "domain hijackers."

If you have turned Domain Protect "Off" in the past, we will reactivate this feature by October 31, 2004. Domain Protect is quick and easy to manage through your Network Solutions account. Simply login and click on the domain name you want to change. On the Domain Details page, you can turn Domain Protect "On" or "Off."

If you have concerns about this transfer policy change, you can contact ICANN directly at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Network Solutions Customer Support

Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy: Implementation Update

As announced previously, ICANN's new Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy will become effective on 12 November 2004.

Under the new transfer policy, registrants will be safer from any risk of having their domains transferred to another registrar without their consent, and will have greater freedom to transfer their domains to an ICANN-accredited registrar that offer them the best combination of service and price.

Rules for Initiating Transfer Requests

In the past, some registrants complained that they were lured into transferring their domains unintentionally as a result of deceptive "renewal" notices from registrars. For an example of this sort of complaint, see the U.S. Federal Trade Commission announcement dated 24 September 2003, titled "Network Solutions Settles FTC Charges -- False Solicitations Allegedly Duped Consumers to Transfer Domain Name Registrations" <http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2003/09/networksolutions.htm>.

Under the new transfer policy, gaining registrars will be required to use a clear standardized form of authorization to obtain the express consent of the registrant prior to initiating a transfer. Also, under the new policy gaining registrars will be obligated to obtain reliable evidence of the identity of the registrant or administrative contact that has requested the transfer using a digital signature, a unique code available only by e-mail to the authorized administrative contact, a notarized statement, or a valid driver license or passport.

Rules for Denying Transfer Requests

The new policy will prohibit registrars from denying outgoing transfers on the basis of a registrant's alleged failure to "double-confirm" the transfer. Under the old policy, some transfer requests that had already been reliably authenticated by the gaining registrar were denied by the losing registrar if technical problems, spam filters or language difficulties resulted in a registrant missing a secondary confirmation e-mail from the losing registrar. Losing registrars will still be able to send a message to a registrant that has authorized an outgoing transfer, but a clear and concise standardized form must be used, and the registrar will not be allowed to deny the transfer if a response is not received from the registrant.

Registrar-Lock Functionality

Registrars will still be able to use "registrar-lock" to give registrants added assurance that their domains will not be transferred or modified without their consent, but only if the registrar provides a readily accessible and reasonable means for registrants to remove the lock if and when the registrant decides to transfer.

New Mechanism for Resolution of Transfer Disputes

The new transfer policy includes a robust dispute resolution policy for resolving disputes between registrars involving alleged violations of the policy. As part of this mechanism, registries will be implementing a "transfer undo" functionality in order to be able to efficiently reverse any transfers initiated in violation of the policy.

Policy Details

The policy was developed through ICANN's consensus-based, bottom-up policy development process. For more details, including the complete text of the policy, of the dispute resolution policy, and copies of the approved standardized forms, please visit <http://www.icann.org/transfers/>.

there are pros & cons though... considering how hard it is to transfer away domains from some DomainDrop (pool.com) registrar-partners...

if you're asking me, the answer is no. I'm still on their email list. Their prices are still too high but people still pay it. I only pay $6.50 new/renew but am working on lowering that to $6 by this time next year.
