And traveling isn't the biggest issue, working outside and taking it to friends/family/wireless spots is also VERY handy :) The keyboard takes time getting used to. I don't have a docking station but I also don't use numbers very much. I think if I used numbers more I'd get the docking station. |

We have a physical office and I also work fomr home allot so again having all my programs settings and emails in one place is great. At home, work or on vacation I can always access the data the same way. Not to mention even at home if I don't want to sit in my office I can take the laptop outside and work while getting some sun. If being mobile is an advantage to you there is no reason to stay with a desktop just for performance. Not to mention you can get a docking station real cheap these days and then you have the best of both worlds. |

A friend of mine replaces his desktop with an Alienware Area51. 3.2ghz beefed up mofo.
I plan on replacing my desktop by the end of the year with a Dell Inspiron 8600. That's a bad ass computer with the pentium M so it lasts for a long time. And you can game on it if you want to (light gaming). My only problem is storage. I'm not sure if I should keep a desktop, or just get a USB external hard drive holder and slap in a 250gb drive. This might be the best answer. For more info about laptops and recommendations you could always check this place out: http://www.notebookforums.com/ Dell often has 20% off coupons too. I just priced an 8600 at $2800 and it came to $2100 after the 20% discount and their other special offers like free shipping. I almost ordered it but decided to wait. |

I'm thinking about switching. I like the idea of the freedom. I would like to travel more in the summer and still keep up on things and also not have to worry about leaving my desktop behind for weeks at a time. Still have to weigh the advantages and disadvatages an all.

I only use a laptop for my main computer.

For video-editing and Photoshop-things you should just think about buying an Apple Powerbook. This thing is exactly what you need. Fast as hell with things that need a lot of processing power :thumbsup

One thing I suggest when getting a laptop for your desktop replacement is don't buy ram when you get the computer. Get the least amount of ram, and then go buy a 1gig stick from newegg.com for $200-225. This will save money and you can add another 1g stick if you ever want to in the future.

I use the bad boy 17" Toshiba Satellite on the left for everything (except for gaming)

I only use laptops. I have a server in my closet set up as a big RAID device, but other than that I'm all laptop all the time.
|
I get a new Vaio once a year and that's all I use.

How hot or loud do the Pentium 4 2.8 or 3.0Ghz procs get?
I'm not too worried bout the loudness as I am the hotness. Like, will your wrists be burned if you lay them on the laptop for 5 hours? |
I use my Dell laptop 80% of the day now.
I use to use both at the same time till last month when I spent 3 weeks in AZ and I got use to doing 100% of my work on this. I have a 2.4 ghz with 512 DDR ram and that is plenty for doing my work. It's nice having a wireless network in my house cause I can lay in bed the first 2-3 hours doing work and can pull or push files to my desktop as needed and the freedom to be able to work all day from your couch is nice. Although the draw back is my laptop sits a foot from my head when I sleep and somedays the second I fall asleep someone ICQs and wakes me up. |
I need both...
When I'm in all-out working mode, I need an ergonomic keyboard and two monitors. For doing bullshit work like checking email a laptop is great though. |
I'am happy with my Dell laptop :)

Both are my main one :)
The joys of remote computing. |

Recently when out in Manila I used my laptop everyday for 2 weeks. I'm back home now and I miss using it as my main computer. Its so damn fast compared to my desktops.
I'm seriously thinking of just buying another laptop with lots more storage space as my current one only has a 30gb hard drive. My desktop has 120gb har drives. |
well when i travel i bring my laptop, because its convinient.
