I'm thinking about switching. I like the idea of the freedom. I would like to travel more in the summer and still keep up on things and also not have to worry about leaving my desktop behind for weeks at a time. Still have to weigh the advantages and disadvatages an all.

For video-editing and Photoshop-things you should just think about buying an Apple Powerbook. This thing is exactly what you need. Fast as hell with things that need a lot of processing power :thumbsup

One thing I suggest when getting a laptop for your desktop replacement is don't buy ram when you get the computer. Get the least amount of ram, and then go buy a 1gig stick from newegg.com for $200-225. This will save money and you can add another 1g stick if you ever want to in the future.

I use the bad boy 17" Toshiba Satellite on the left for everything (except for gaming)

I only use laptops. I have a server in my closet set up as a big RAID device, but other than that I'm all laptop all the time.

Kimmykim 10-11-2004 12:31 PM

I get a new Vaio once a year and that's all I use.

How hot or loud do the Pentium 4 2.8 or 3.0Ghz procs get?

I'm not too worried bout the loudness as I am the hotness. Like, will your wrists be burned if you lay them on the laptop for 5 hours?

I use my Dell laptop 80% of the day now.

I use to use both at the same time till last month when I spent 3 weeks in AZ and I got use to doing 100% of my work on this.

I have a 2.4 ghz with 512 DDR ram and that is plenty for doing my work.

It's nice having a wireless network in my house cause I can lay in bed the first 2-3 hours doing work and can pull or push files to my desktop as needed and the freedom to be able to work all day from your couch is nice.

Although the draw back is my laptop sits a foot from my head when I sleep and somedays the second I fall asleep someone ICQs and wakes me up.

I need both...

When I'm in all-out working mode, I need an ergonomic keyboard and two monitors.

For doing bullshit work like checking email a laptop is great though.

jcrow 10-11-2004 01:36 PM

I'am happy with my Dell laptop :)

chaze 10-11-2004 02:02 PM

Yep, I'm on it right now.

The joys of remote computing.

1) Video editing (processing) is highly processor intensive. The faster your processor and bus, the faster you will have your finished product. Faster chips are cheaper for your desktop than for a laptop. You can always upgrade your motherboard to handle the next generation of chips. Not so on a laptop.

2) Laptops don't last forever. Ask anybody who's used one extensively. Eventually it will die. When it does (usually right after warranty exprires) many problems will be too expensive to fix. You'll end up buying another laptop.

In the long run, I think you will spend more money and be frustrated with your results. Keep a desktop machine.

Recently when out in Manila I used my laptop everyday for 2 weeks. I'm back home now and I miss using it as my main computer. Its so damn fast compared to my desktops.

I'm seriously thinking of just buying another laptop with lots more storage space as my current one only has a 30gb hard drive. My desktop has 120gb har drives.

reynold 10-12-2004 01:46 AM

well when i travel i bring my laptop, because its convinient.
