:stoned How same-sex marriage became a sin

The first thing to understand is that theology is philosophy. There's no way to 'prove' anything beyond argument. The second thing to understand is Aristotle's idea of 'natural law,' which is basically 'the natural order of things' or 'how nature works.' In the 13th century, Thomas Aquinas took the idea one step further: he defined natural law as 'God's divine law' -- which, he argued, is the eternal law of the universe. And that's where the trouble starts. Suddenly what is natural comes from God, not nature. Which is a short hop, skip and a jump to 'God tells us there's a right way, and a wrong way.' You can see where we're going with this. Here are some of the many fascinating points from this fascinating article --

One of the major differences between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism is that Catholicism is strongly anchored in Aquinas's 'natural law' while Protestantism isn't as committed to it. Which helps explains Protestantism's generally more liberal stand on same-sex marriage (not all Protestants, however)

The Church had nothing at all to do with marriage, which was a secular event, until the 1500s

There's nothing in the Bible that insists on monogamy; in fact, polygamy is mentioned more often than homosexuality

Today's divergent attitudes toward same-sex marriage stem from the emergence of various branches of Christianity, beginning about 500 years ago.

There's a lot more. If you're of the historical or religious bent, you'll be fascinated. Read the full article on The Globe and Mail:

We were listening in on Heaven the other day and heard God distinctly say, "The only divine law I know is chaos!"
